Ampersand in Ithaca, in NYC – and on national radio!

Hey, folks. I’ll be visiting New York state for the next week or so – I’m going to be hanging out with my family in Ithaca. I’ve never even met my neice before, so I’m looking forward to the trip.

So if you’re an “Alas” reader in the Ithaca area between August 11 and August 18 and would like to have lunch with Ampersand, leave a comment in this thread and maybe we can work it out.

Also, I’ll be in New York City on Monday the 16th, returning to Ithaca sometime on Tuesday the 17th. Again, any “Alas” readers who’d like to get together while I’m in NYC, leave a comment and maybe we’ll work something out. It looks to me like I’m available for an early dinner on Monday, or for breakfast/early lunch on Tuesday. (Warning to everyone: My dining preferences are for inexpensive diners serving bland American food, rather than interesting ethnic restaurants or expensive coffee shops.)

While I’m in NYC, I’m going to be a guest on Janeane Garofalo’s radio show, The Majority Report. I’ll be debating Megan McArdle, aka Jane Galt, who I hope will not entirely humiliate me. If you’d like to hear me on the air, tune in via radio or webcast at 7:15 pm (eastern) on Monday, August 16.

Be sure to ask Jeneane “educated beyond her intelligence” Garofalo is she was ever funny before she started regurgitating propaganda for the small minded thumb suckers.

    Ampersand says:

Earl, let me assure you that the lame attempt at wit in your comment in no way reduces your credibility as a judge of good comedy.

Too bad you’re not going to be closer to Rochester during your journey…

Ah, well. Enjoy your trip and your 15 minutes!!

Oh, and Earl, I predict that anti-intellectualism will be the downfall of conservatives. After you purge all the “intellectuals” from your ranks, who will be smart enough to drive the short-bus?

Did someone mention Rochester? [sigh] Now I’m feeling homesick.

Stop by the McGregor winery and drink some riesling for me…..

Sounds like an interesting adventure. What will you be debating?

  7. 7
    Ampersand says:

We’ll be debating “women’s issues.” Which issues in particular, Megan and I are still discussing.

Radio? You won’t be able to whip out cartoon sketches to support your views!

Good luck– I’m sure you will not be humiliated.

Good luck Amp with the show. Do they repeat? That is
3:15 in the morning for me!

Garofalo is the only reason I can tolerate Air America at all. Congrats, Amp. :)

    Aaron V. says:

:jealous: Janeane, she’s dreamy…..make sure you get pictures of you with her – can I get you a DVD of Mystery Men for her to sign for us?

And Earl, I think you’re talking about Michael Weiner, er, “Savage”. Thank you, drive-through…

    NancyP says:

Michael Weiner (“Savage”) is educated? No wonder the school systems are in trouble.

    Raznor says:

Kick ass, Amp. I look forward to it.

Rachel Ann, if you join Air America via their website you can check out archives.

Earl, that was the lamest attempt to insult someone I’ve ever seen. No wait, second lamest.

An, that’s some pretty off-topic random blogwhoring there, but you get points for trying.

And Aaron, too true, too true.

I’ll be damned, Your voice on Air Amerika. Welcome to heaven … (smile)

If you feel like traveling to the northwesternmost edge of NYC on Monday night, Amp, Robin and I will treat you to dinner (I get home at 6 PM). Lots of way cool deco-facade diners in lower Westchester County! And it’s been way too long since we’ve seen you (I don’t think Robin’s ever met you)!!

    Kevin Moore says:

Definitely post pics of you and Janeane. That’s be cute. And get her number, unless she asks for yours first. But don’t call right away, cuz that will look to desperate. But don’t call too late, cuz that’s rude. Either that, or arrage a coffee for the next day, about mid-afternoon, and leave enough time for a movie. But if the chemistry just isn’t there, there should be a decent bookstore nearby that you can duck into.

    Raznor says:

Always a step ahead of the game, aren’t you Kevin.

if you’re still checking, I’m in NJ. I can hope the train to NYC after work, but probably not for an early dinner. Then again, it may work out that I’m in NYC for work on Tuesday. Drop me an email with your contact information.

Congratulations! I hope that you are on the right side of women’s issues :).

Barry’s part had already finished when I finally figured out how to plug in the show (I hadn’t RealPlayer installed).
It’s great to get to listen to Juan Cole and all, but still, talk about feeling like Mr Bean (the cartoon version).

(A pity the audio archives are not available yet).

    Steve Cohen says:

Megan is a nervy one. She likes to pretend with an air of great authority that she KNOWS things that nobody else does. Upon closer examination, her claims turn out to be bullshit, but I have seen her intimidate on chutzpah alone people who actually know a good deal more than she does.

For example, there was the time she claimed she know all about union pay scales and that unions were uniformly full of shit. When finally pressed for more information it turns out that her source for this claim was a few weeks of temping as a payroll clerk.

Don’t be sucked in. If she starts stating with great authority something that you know to be false, press her on her sources.
