Server Upgrade Complete!

Happy Feet are too happy

There’s still some work to be done restoring “Alas,” but all the posts and functionality seem to have been restored. Hopefully “Alas” is no longer incredibly slow-loading! Let me know if you spot any bugs.

    It’s very pretty.

So now that you’ve drawn my attention to the site design, what is with the man and the woman in the header? Why is he so angry? Why does she have an umbrella? It’s a cute drawing, but what does it represent about this blog? So far I get, “We will steal your umbrellas! And be smug about it! Bwa ha ha!”

I was going to say it doesn’t seem any faster, but then I actually thought about it and realized that the site had been getting pretty molasses-like. Now it’s fine.

@Kevin, the logo clearly represents Amp’s masculine self-hatred and desire to be a woman. The umbrella symbolizes his use of art to shield this conflict from the judgmental world – note that it is bent and tattered, representing his fraying ego as this dystonic conflict rages.

Heh, I wrote that as a joke but it’s plausible. With all that Mirka money coming in, you’ll be able to make your dream come true soon, Amp. We support and love you. ;)

It seems faster. What did you change?

    Ampersand says:

We switched to a different server.

Threaded comments! How many levels of nesting can you get?

    Jake Squid says:

Oh, how I hate threaded comments.

    Jake Squid says:

Where’d the edit function go? And how come it no longer remembers me?

  8. 8
    Ampersand says:

    I don’t know, and I don’t know. I’ll look into it.

    Ampersand says:

Okay, make sure that you’re going to “amptoons.com,” not “www.amptoons.com,” and that fixes the problem (both of being remembered, and of having the option to edit your comments).

At least, it fixed it for me. Anyone else?

Also, if anyone has any ideas of how I could get rid of this bug (so that people are remembered without regard to if they used “www” or not), please do share.

    Ampersand says:

Oh, and I got rid of threaded comments, because we had a big discussion about them last time and most people didn’t like them. (But Robert, to answer your question, I could have set it to up to 10 levels).

I’m leaving the avatars in, because I like avatars, but if you don’t get an avatar then it’ll just be blank. If you want an avatar, go to this site to set one up.

    Robert says:

I like avatars too. I changed my picture in honor of your site; let’s see if it updates.

    ETA: Nope.

    Ampersand says:

It takes a few minutes, but it does update.

    Jake Squid says:

Initial test of remembering me. Which it doesn’t at first.

  14. 14
    Robert says:

Maybe it just hates you guys. Because you aren’t cool enough to have avatars.

    Jake Squid says:

And, wonderfully, I am now remembererered.

    nm says:

Robert, I have an avatar. It’s just invisible to anyone less cool than I am.

  17. 17
    Robert says:

That’s a great feature to have! My avatar is only visible to total dorks. :P

  18. 18
    nm says:

Wait, you have an avatar too? What does it look like? :-)

  19. 19
    Robert says:

    An empty beige space.

I’m not sure which one of us won but that was fun.

    RonF says:

Hm. That was simple. I decided I’d set up an avatar and there it is.

A bit off-topic: I’d appreciate knowing the names of the thread authors over at TADA; could you include them next at the top or bottom of the threads? Thanks.

(And if you haven’t been over there lately, it’s really streamlined.)

  23. 24
    Ampersand says:

Yeah, TADA got wiped at the same time ALAS did, but after spending days getting ALAS sort of in shape (there are still missing things, but it’s okay), I have to pay attention to cartooning for a while. I’m hoping to get around to fixing up TADA next week.

BTW, I just noticed that my first comment on this thread has completely disappeared. Not that it was valuable or interesting, but I’m mentioning it in the spirit of reporting bugs.

  25. 26
    Ampersand says:

Yeesh! Sorry about that, NM. I hope that doesn’t happen again.

    nm says:

Well, it does make my exchange with Robert more mysterious, so it’s got that going for it.
