I'm engaged!

This afternoon my lovely girlfriend got home from work, took me outside to our deck, proposed to me, and became my lovely fiancée! Yay us!

And if you decide to have a big wedding to-do, and you want someone to make jewelry for bride, bridesmaids, etc, chat with me.

OMG don’t have a big wedding to-do! Get married with as few people as possible. You can always throw a reception later.

Yeah, our theory is that we don’t want to throw the kind of party that we wouldn’t want to go to, so if it’s a ‘big to-do’, that’ll be because we want a bunch of people there, not because we want to be all fancy and ridiculous and whatnot.

Oh, and no diamond, because we’re poor (and diamonds are evil), but she ordered me a lovely Cthulhu ring for our anniversary, and coincidentally, it should be arriving any day now!

Congratulations! Big weddings can be kind of fun, but only if you ignore the traditional rule that the happy couple should leave during the reception. That is a rule that might make sense if everyone you invite is local, but the virtue of a wedding (as a big party) is that it can be used to summon people you like who are scattered to the four winds. If you use it for that, the post-reception after-party is the best part of the whole thing.

Eh. We didn’t have a fancy wedding, but we still had an excuse for me to make wedding jewelry. ;) If Emily just wants something to adorn her dress at wedding-themed shindig, gala, dinner party or rave, consider me a resource to tap.

Congrats! (And here I thought y’all were already married.)

(A big advantage of handmade jewelry is that it can do spectacular things with materials such as thread, wool, wood, and glass, making for pieces that are more environmentally friendly than gold or diamonds as well as unique.)

(Do you know how much rock they have to blast out of the earth to get one ounce of gold? Three to four tons, that’s how much. And then they have to use very nasty chemicals on it to separate the gold from the rock. I’ll never buy gold jewelry again.)

I can’t even tell what the shirt says.

As far as big vs. small wedding – I had a medium wedding (~125 people), but that was back in the early 70’s. We got married at my wife’s home parish (and I think the priest had been into the Communion wine because he dated the license “1946” and I had to get him to change it). The reception was at a VFW hall – $8.00/plate for all you could eat and a 4 hour open bar. Anyway, the point is, what kind of party do you want to have and who’s coming?

First, if you don’t have the energy to hold a big party, then screw it. It’s your wedding, nobody else’s, and you don’t owe anyone an explanation. But if you’ve got the energy and if there’s people coming from out of town that had to spend $$ on transportation and that you aren’t likely to see anytime soon, then hell, have a big one and give people something to talk about for a while. After all, how many excuses do you have in your life to have a really big blowout?

    Cathy says:

    Hey my love,

I almost immediately started crying when I read that. Pregnancy has made me a completely different person, I swear lol. I guess I’m in that trimester when every nice thing becomes magical on a Disney level lol.

I know you have no idea who I am but if I may, I’d love to add my two cents. My fiance and I are getting married in the States (he’s from England) but I’d also like to keep it small. I’m getting to a point of being very selective of the people I’m around and sometimes I think there is a huge pressure to have a large wedding because of what other people want to project on you. Suddenly everyone wants to be your wedding planner and wants to be that friend that you gush over your wedding dress with and when you hear it from everyone it starts to feel a little selfish. Forgive me if I sound a bit crazy with this comment but I’ve been speaking up a lot since I’ve gotten pregnant because of my frustrations with being projected upon. The fact that my baby’s gender is now a betting game for some people, the constant names being thrown at me, and this eerie feeling I get from some people that if they’re nice enough to me they might become a godparent… it’s like, way to take my happy moment and selfishly turn it into your fantasy project. Anyway, my personal issues aside lol, what I’m trying to say is that I hope you find a way to involve people and don’t experience people getting out of hand with it. Sticking with people who are genuinely interested in what I want has been the biggest lesson learned for me these past few months.

Congratulations and I wish you all the best.

Thanks, Sylphhead, I think so too! I actually got it for her (and got one for me) at Woot Shirts some time back. Yes, we’re exactly the kind of disgusting couple who wear matching shirts.

It has a picture of a ‘bleeding heart’, and says ‘liberal’ beneath it. ;-)

    Thank you!

And nope, it’s Tilden Park, across the bay, up in the Berkeley hills . . . the photo was actually taken shortly after we realized that we were lost, so if you see desperation, fear, and an internal preparation for impending cannibalism in our eyes, that’s what was going on. Luckily we got back to The Little Farm about 5 minutes later. Good thing, too.
