{"id":123,"date":"2003-05-18T07:38:43","date_gmt":"2003-05-18T15:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/archives\/2003\/05\/18\/abstinence-education-is-not-abstinence\/"},"modified":"2003-05-18T07:38:43","modified_gmt":"2003-05-18T15:38:43","slug":"abstinence-education-is-not-abstinence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=123","title":{"rendered":"Abstinence education is not abstinence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sara at <a href=\"http:\/\/home.uchicago.edu\/~snbutler\/2003_05_01_diotima_archive.html#94350805\">Diotima<\/a> uncritically quotes from an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/Articles\/ReadArticle.asp?ID=7788\">article<\/a> in <i>Frontpage<\/i>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"snip\">Like NOW, the YWCA advocates for more Title X public funding to discuss sexually transmitted diseases, but opposes abstinence education, the only known guarantee of 100% protection from an STD.<\/div>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to pick on Sara too much &#8211; she&#8217;s better than most anti-feminists, and even <a href=\"http:\/\/home.uchicago.edu\/~snbutler\/2003_05_01_diotima_archive.html#94516678\">agrees<\/a> with feminists on some issues while occasionally <a href=\"http:\/\/home.uchicago.edu\/~snbutler\/2003_05_01_diotima_archive.html#94302742\">diverging<\/a> from anti-feminist orthodoxy.<\/p>\n<p>But this quote is dishonest. The YWCA doesn&#8217;t oppose abstinence education &#8211; it opposes abstinence-<i>only<\/i> education. Abstinence-only education is an entirely different thing than just teaching and encouraging abstinence; to pretend the two are the same thing is a lie.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the quote is plain wrong. Maybe the extremists at <i>Frontpage Magazine<\/i> believe that abstinence education (as opposed to abstinence itself) guarantees &#8220;100% protection&#8221; from STDs, but no one with a working brain could agree with them (which makes it puzzling that Sara seemingly endorses the quote). Since fewer than 100% of teens who attend an abstinence education program actually will abstain (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aap.org\/advocacy\/washing\/review_of_abstinence_ed.htm\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a> says &#8220;26% of adolescent couples trying to abstain from intercourse will become pregnant within 1 year&#8221;), it&#8217;s obvious that abstinence education doesn&#8217;t provide &#8220;100% protection.&#8221;<\/ol>\n<p>The <i>Frontpage<\/i> article (in another bit uncritically quoted by Sara) goes on to complain that the YWCA &#8220;seeks to eliminate racism.&#8221; The horror!
