If you don&#8217;t like well-written essays about grossness, then <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.badchristian.com\/blogs\/index.php\/2005\/03\/16\/airing_my_dirty_laundry\">I suggest you not follow this link<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Nicely-written, impressionistic guest-post post on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.salon.com\/0003522\/2005\/03\/13.html\">Beauty Dish<\/a> &#8211; written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patiastephens.com\/\">Patia Stephens<\/a>, whose blog I haven&#8217;t encountered before &#8211; discusses fat and beauty in a fat-phobic culture.<br \/>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve spent time in the body-image trenches; I&#8217;ve read &#8220;The Beauty Myth&#8221; and &#8220;Fat!So?&#8221; and &#8220;Love Your Looks.&#8221; I know that looksism is a patriarchal tool of oppression, that weight doesn&#8217;t equal worth, that life&#8217;s too short for self-loathing and celery sticks. I&#8217;ve written papers on fat as a human rights issue and the social indoctrination of girls in &#8220;Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland.&#8221; None of these things change the fact that I just want to be loved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Via <a href=\"http:\/\/xxblog.com\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/03\/16\/the-dish-on-beauty\/\">XX<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patiastephens.com\/2005\/03\/on-lighter-note.html\">Patia <\/a>comes this collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.candyboots.com\/wwcards.html\">Weight Watchers Recipe cards from 1974<\/a>. It&#8217;s much, much funnier than it sounds, I promise.<\/li>\n<li>And again via Patia, <a href=\"http:\/\/losingit.simplyshylah.com\/\">Losing It<\/a>, a really interesting blog about body image, weight, and trying to fine a sane position on fat and dieting while living in a culture that can&#8217;t see &#8220;sane&#8221; with a telescope.<\/li>\n<li>Eugene Volokh, who I generally think of as one of the smartest, most reasonable right-wingers out there, <a href=\"http:\/\/volokh.com\/archives\/archive_2005_03_13-2005_03_19.shtml#1111021309\">thinks the Iranian government is right about torture<\/a>. Instapundit <a href=\"http:\/\/instapundit.com\/archives\/021831.php\">agrees<\/a>. There really isn&#8217;t much to say to that, but <a href=\"http:\/\/alicublog.blogspot.com\/2005_03_13_alicublog_archive.html#111107499045678930\">Aliciablog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/therightcoast.blogspot.com\/2005_03_01_therightcoast_archive.html#111104848012461035\">The Right Coast<\/a>,  <a href=\"http:\/\/yglesias.typepad.com\/matthew\/2005\/03\/tenured_radical.html\">Matt Yglesias<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/digbysblog.blogspot.com\/2005_03_13_digbysblog_archive.html#111109257795419294\">Digby<\/a> nonetheless all have responses worth reading. Many links via <a href=\"http:\/\/bodyandsoul.typepad.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/vengeance_is_mi.html\">Body and Soul<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of torture, do you know what to call it when you kick someone in the crotch, slam them into walls and furnature, and force them to breathe water instead of air? Well, if you&#8217;re our government, you call it <a href=\"http:\/\/bodyandsoul.typepad.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/prisoner_deaths.html\">&#8220;involuntary manslaughter.&#8221;<\/a>  Disgusting.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/trishwilson.typepad.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/political_disco.html\">Trish Wilson has a great post<\/a> on why a-list bloggers seem to have so much trouble finding women they want to link to, and on the &#8220;food fights&#8221; that pass for debate in the mainstream media. <a href=\"http:\/\/shakespearessister.blogspot.com\/2005\/03\/get-real.html\">Shakespeare&#8217;s Sister<\/a>, meanwhile, reports what some A-list bloggers say when they can be anonymous. And while we&#8217;re on the subject, don&#8217;t miss this op-ed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/doc.mhtml?i=20050404&#038;s=pollitt\">Katha Pollitt<\/a>, and this typically thoughtful post from <a href=\"http:\/\/bodyandsoul.typepad.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/women_bloggers.html\">Body and Soul<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twopercentco.com\/rants\/archives\/2005\/03\/love_and_narria_1.html\">The Two Percent Company<\/a> favors the legalization of gay marraige, pluralistic marriage, and incest marriage. I also favor legalizing pluralistic marriage (aka polygamy), but I think it&#8217;s a bad idea &#8211; both logically and politically &#8211; to consider all three issues within a single discussion, as if they were all the same issue. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/respectfulofotters.blogspot.com\/2005_03_01_respectfulofotters_archive.html#111082602251750271\">Respectful of Otters<\/a> discusses why &#8220;crack babies&#8221; &#8211; a mostly fictional threat &#8211; was such a huge story, while &#8220;lead paint babies&#8221; &#8211; a real and ongoing problem &#8211; was pretty much ignored by the mainstream media.
