{"id":1526,"date":"2005-05-04T12:55:08","date_gmt":"2005-05-04T19:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/05\/04\/recording-of-ssm-debate-at-stanford\/"},"modified":"2005-05-04T12:55:08","modified_gmt":"2005-05-04T19:55:08","slug":"recording-of-ssm-debate-at-stanford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=1526","title":{"rendered":"Recording of SSM Debate at Stanford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you don&#8217;t mind listening to audio stuff, <a href=\"http:\/\/videlicet.stanford.edu:8080\/ramgen\/programs\/ACS\/20050420_ACS_GayMarriage.rm\">check out this debate<\/a> between Evan Wolfson, Executive Director of <a href=\"www.freedomtomarry.org\">Freedom to Marry<\/a>, and Reverand Lou Sheldon, President of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.traditionalvalues.org\/\">Traditional Values Coalition<\/a>. The debate took place on April 20th at Stanford Law School.<\/p>\n<p>I found it startling how unprepared Sheldon was; when discussing the question of same-sex marriage in the Scandinavian countries, for example, he said that he didn&#8217;t know the difference between causation and association. It&#8217;s also striking how poorly hidden the Reverand&#8217;s obvious anti-gay bias is (at one point he dismisses a document Wolfson cites by sneering that the authors were gay). I kept imagining people from the &#8220;opposing SSM isn&#8217;t anti-gay&#8221; wing listening to Reverand Sheldon and wincing.<\/p>\n<p>I frequently read the reasonable opposition to same-sex marriage &#8211; people like Elizabeth at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familyscholars.org\/\">Family Scholars<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/eve-tushnet.blogspot.com\/\">Eve Tushnet<\/a>, who are well-informed and don&#8217;t have a personal bias against lesbians and gays. If I&#8217;m not careful, this could lead me to a distorted view of the opposition; bigots like Reverand Sheldon are much more typical of the anti-SSM movement&#8217;s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, <a href=\"http:\/\/videlicet.stanford.edu:8080\/ramgen\/programs\/ACS\/20050420_ACS_GayMarriage.rm\">it&#8217;s fun listening<\/a> if you have something to do with your hands for a long while, like inking a page of your comic book or something like that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you don&#8217;t mind listening to audio stuff, check out this debate between Evan Wolfson, Executive Director of Freedom to Marry, and Reverand Lou Sheldon, President of the Traditional Values Coalition.
