Principal Thomas Cook of <a href="http://www.mnsd.net/>Marple Newtown School District near Philadelphia denied parent Donna Busch from reading from the bible, citing seperation of church and state as the reason. Mrs. Busch claims this denial violated her rights to free speech, and the Rutherford Institute, a conservative christian oriented non-profit, has taken up her cause.

The school board has defended Principal Cook, stating that the law prevents advocacy or teaching of religion.

Here is the passage that she wished to read to the children (Psalm 118):
<pracut>

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
2 Let Israel say: “His love endures forever.”
3 Let the house of Aaron say: “His love endures forever.”
4 Let those who fear the LORD say: “His love endures forever.”
5 In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free.
6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid.
