This is a story that has been told in several different versions. Here is my first pass at Attar’s take on it in Elahi Nameh<\/em>. Izrail is the name of the Angel of Death:<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve heard that one day Izrail,\u2028
\nconsumer of souls, entered the hall
\n\u2028where Solomon reigned. Seated there
\n\u2028was a young man. God\u2019s soul collector
\n\u2028glanced quickly at the young man\u2019s face,
\n\u2028turned around and left the palace.
\n\u2028Terrified, the young man ran
\n\u2028to Solomon for help. \u201cYou can,\u2028
\nI know, command the clouds. Choose one
\n\u2028to carry me away from here.
\n\u2028Death has sickened me with fear.\u201d\u2028
\nSolomon did as the man asked.
\n\u2028A cloud carried him from Fars
\n\u2028to India. Three days passed
\n\u2028before Izrail came again.\u2028
\n\u201cSwordless shedder of blood,\u201d Solomon
\n\u2028addressed him, \u201cwhy such a keen glance
\n\u2028when you saw that young man?\u201d \u201cI\u2019d planned,\u201d
\n\u2028the angel answered, \u201cat God\u2019s command,
\n\u2028to seize his soul in India
\n\u2028three days from when you saw me last;
\n\u2028but when I saw him in this room,
\n\u2028I did not understand how three days\u2019 time\u2028
\nwould be enough for him to get there.
\n\u2028When the cloud bore him off, I followed,\u2028
\nand took his soul to meet with God.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
