During this same time period, increasing proportions of 18\u201319-year-olds reported having ever had sex, yet fewer of them became pregnant. The likely reason is improved contraceptive use and use of more effective methods.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If teens are more likely to have sex, that&#8217;s a reversal of the recent trends reported by a paper in <em>Pediatrics<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/early\/2013\/03\/27\/peds.2012-3495\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/age-of-having-sex-graph.png\" alt=\"age-of-having-sex-graph\" width=\"590\" height=\"419\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18720\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/religionversusmedicine.blogspot.com\/2010\/06\/religiousness-and-teen-pregnancy-rate.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/teen-birth-rate-religiosity-588x650.jpg\" alt=\"teen-birth-rate-religiosity\" width=\"588\" height=\"650\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/teen-birth-rate-religiosity-588x650.jpg 588w, https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/teen-birth-rate-religiosity.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p> The statistical significance of this relationship survives controlling for mean income (more religious states tend to have lower mean income), and, of course controlling for abortion rates (if states with higher religiosity have lower abortion rates then higher teen birth birth rates would not necessarily be a surprise).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;d also highly recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/slatestarcodex.com\/2013\/06\/01\/literally-inconceivable-contraceptives-and-abortion-rates\/\">this post from Slate Star Codex<\/a> on abortion and contraception usage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just putting them out there for reference and discussion.
