It&#8217;s not surprising that English is the most studied language in the world:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2015\/04\/23\/the-worlds-languages-in-7-maps-and-charts\/?tid=HP_more?tid=HP_more\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/wp-apps\/imrs.php?src=https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/files\/2015\/04\/largest-speakers1.jpg&amp;w=1484\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But I did find this chart illustrating how many countries a given language is spoken in to\u00a0be worth thinking more deeply about:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2015\/04\/23\/the-worlds-languages-in-7-maps-and-charts\/?tid=HP_more?tid=HP_more\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/wp-apps\/imrs.php?src=https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/files\/2015\/04\/languages-by-country1.jpg&amp;w=1484\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a>The reach\u00a0of English is due, of course, first to British colonialism and imperialism and, second, to the dominance of the United States,\u00a0but it&#8217;s interesting to set\u00a0English&#8217;s reach in comparison to these other languages next to the numbers of people who speak each language:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2015\/04\/23\/the-worlds-languages-in-7-maps-and-charts\/?tid=HP_more?tid=HP_more\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/wp-apps\/imrs.php?src=https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/files\/2015\/04\/largest-languages-1.jpg&amp;w=1484\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"436\" \/><\/a>Just putting these numbers up against each other, of course, doesn&#8217;t tell us very much, but it does provide an interesting starting point for thinking about\u00a0how the politics of language shape the world we live in.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This series of graphs, maps, and charts from the\u00a0The Washington Post\u00a0illustrates some fascinating information about the world&#8217;s languages.
