And you&#8217;re welcome to post links to your own stuff here too, if you like.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some of what I&#8217;ve read lately:\n<pracut>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liberalfeministbias.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/some-talking-points-about-alito.html\"><strong>Some Talking Points About Samuel Alito<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/desperatekingdoms.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/carnival-of-bent-attractions-second.html\"><strong>The Second Carnival of Bent Attractions is out.<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nCheck it out!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.shrub.com\/archives\/tekanji\/2006-01-06_110\"><strong>&#8220;Girl Power&#8221; In Pop Culture Tends To Mean T&#038;A<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"snip\">These women clearly fit into the idea of &#8220;girl power&#8221;\u009d that&#8217;s been floating around the entertainment industry for the past 10+ years. They are valued for their &#8220;strength,&#8221;\u009d as evidenced by how hard they can punch&#8230;. They are women who can, and do kick ass. But, is this &#8220;power&#8221;\u009d that of a true kind or is the phenomenon of women kicking ass a way to co-opt female power and bring it back firmly under men&#8217;s control?<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/gender\/story\/0,11812,1671247,00.html\"><strong>Body Hatred: A Major Export of The Western World<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nI have issues with the book <em>Fat Is A Feminist Issue<\/em>, which despite it&#8217;s important &#8211; even seminal &#8211; place in the literature, is still a diet book that incorporates lots of anti-fat nonsense. Nevertheless, this introduction Orbach wrote for the new edition is excellent. Curtsy: <a href=\"http:\/\/brutalwomen.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/fat-still-feminist-issue.html\">Brutal Women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theargumentclinic.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/why-not-just-fire-admiral-cain-bg.html\"><strong>Why Doesn&#8217;t The President Just Fire Admiral Cain?<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re not watching <em>Battlestar Galactica<\/em>, this post will make no sense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/sibylla\/749828.html\"><strong>Size Six: The Western Women&#8217;s Harem<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"snip\">Unlike the Muslim man, who uses space to establish male domination by excluding women from the public arena, the Western man manipulates time and light. He declares that in order to be beautiful, a woman must look fourteen years old. If she dares to look fifty, or worse, sixty, she is beyond the pale. By putting the spotlight on the female child and framing her as the ideal of beauty, he condemns the mature woman to invisibility. In fact, the modern Western man enforces Immanuel Kant&#8217;s nineteenth-century theories: To be beautiful, women have to appear childish and brainless.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sebbo.org\/diaries\/diary\/glossary\/screenplay.html\"><strong>Myths About Anthropology and Language<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThis cracked me up. Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longstoryshortpier.com\/vaults\/2006\/01\/08\/heh-indeed\">Kip<\/a>, who comments (or quotes?) &#8220;Sadly, the Intuit culture will die before the myth about Eskimo words for snow.&#8221; Speaking of which&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.longstoryshortpier.com\/vaults\/2006\/01\/08\/hammer\"><strong>&#8220;Long Story, Short Pier&#8221; Is Back!<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThe blogosphere, insofar as it can ever be said to have been at one time worth, in whatever sense of worth applies, browsing, is so once again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/barbhowe.typepad.com\/lucky\/2006\/01\/books_their_cov.html\"><strong>Books, Their Covers and The Consequences<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"snip\">The truth is I honestly enjoy and feel comfortable with both looks and, at heart, I don&#8217;t really understand why society doesn&#8217;t as well.  (It&#8217;s like when I was little; I had Barbies and I loved My Little Ponies but I also liked my brother&#8217;s Matchbox cars and playing with He-man (and his tiger) with the boys at school.  I didn&#8217;t think I should have to choose.)  But each &#8220;look&#8221; has baggage.  It either opens doors or closes them. <\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/battlepanda.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/saluting-american-hero.html\"><strong>Hugh Thompson, American Hero<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nAlthough taught as a moral model in Denmark, he&#8217;s largely forgotten here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uts.cc.utexas.edu\/~rjensen\/freelance\/whiteprivilege.htm\"><strong>White Priviilege 101<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/vaw00\/edited_transcript.html\"><strong>Brief Interview with Catharine MacKinnon<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"snip\">This idea that the problem of rape has something to do with the male body is vicious and sexist; at best, it puts all the blame on the wrong body part. I&#8217;m afraid we are going to have to deal with how the entire society sexualizes power, makes forcing sex on someone with less power sexy. Bodies are simple.
