Hey everyone,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been about six weeks since my novella, <\/span>January Fifteenth<\/span><\/i><\/a>, came out. I can hardly believe the amazing and generous reception it\u2019s getting. Thank you to <\/span>everyone <\/span><\/i>who\u2019s read and\/or written about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, I wrote about <\/span>\u201cThe Voices of January Fifteenth<\/em>\u201d as part of My Favorite Bit<\/span><\/a>, a feature on the blog of the awesome Mary Robinette Kowal where authors talk about some of the pieces of their projects they love most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What I loved most? Developing the characters\u2019 voices.<\/span><\/h2>\n

January Fifteenth<\/em> is written from the perspectives of four different women as they go through the day when they collect their Universal Basic Income payments that will help support them through the year. Each character has a different way of thinking about and interacting with the world. I love figuring out how to embody that in prose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a couple snippets from what I wrote at Mary Robinette\u2019s:<\/span><\/p>\n

HANNAH<\/span><\/p>\n

Hannah\u2019s on constant high alert. If fear causes fight, flight, freeze or fawn, Hannah\u2019s in the freeze camp\u2026 <\/span>Anxiety makes some people terse, but Hannah\u2019s sentences are long and detailed. She\u2019s too nervous to decide at a glance whether something is a threat or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

JANELLE<\/span><\/p>\n

Janelle and Nevaeh are a blast. They\u2019re quick-witted chatterboxes. Even inside her head, Janelle plays with words, goes on dramatic tangents, and trawls for jokes\u2026 Itried to balance the lengths of the novella\u2019s threads, but it\u2019s definitely <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> split into perfect quarters. Janelle and Nevaeh are part of the reason why. They want to talk forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
