I can hardly believe the amazing and generous reception it\u2019s getting. Developing the characters\u2019 voices.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>January Fifteenth<\/em> is written from the perspectives of four different women as they go through the day when they collect their Universal Basic Income payments that will help support them through the year. Each character has a different way of thinking about and interacting with the world. I love figuring out how to embody that in prose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a couple snippets from what I wrote at Mary Robinette\u2019s:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HANNAH<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah\u2019s on constant high alert. If fear causes fight, flight, freeze or fawn, Hannah\u2019s in the freeze camp\u2026 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety makes some people terse, but Hannah\u2019s sentences are long and detailed. She\u2019s too nervous to decide at a glance whether something is a threat or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JANELLE<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janelle and Nevaeh are a blast. They\u2019re quick-witted chatterboxes. Even inside her head, Janelle plays with words, goes on dramatic tangents, and trawls for jokes\u2026 Itried to balance the lengths of the novella\u2019s threads, but it\u2019s definitely <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> split into perfect quarters. Janelle and Nevaeh are part of the reason why.
