{"id":276,"date":"2003-07-18T06:54:44","date_gmt":"2003-07-18T14:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/archives\/2003\/07\/18\/a-bit-more-on-unfpa-and-on-the-global-gag-rule\/"},"modified":"2003-07-18T06:54:44","modified_gmt":"2003-07-18T14:54:44","slug":"a-bit-more-on-unfpa-and-on-the-global-gag-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=276","title":{"rendered":"A bit more on UNFPA, and on the Global Gag Rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>* Excellent posts on the appalling UNFPA situation over at the Appalachia Alumni Association blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appalachia-alumni-association.net\/blog\/archives\/hope030717-80.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.appalachia-alumni-association.net\/blog\/archives\/hope030717-78.html\">here<\/a>, including info on how to donate to UNFPA.<\/p>\n<p>From an AAA post:<\/p>\n<div class=\"snip\">UNFPA estimates that the loss of US funding will &#8220;result in 2 million unwanted pregnancies per year, nearly 800,000 abortions, 4,700 maternal deaths and 77,000 infant and child deaths.&#8221; In a list of country-specific impacts, here&#8217;s one of the saddest: &#8220;In Bangladesh, where one woman dies every hour from complications during pregnancy and childbirth, UNFPA will be forced to curtail training for doctors on how to deal with obstetric emergencies.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>* There is one bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reproductiverights.org\/pr_03_0710ggr.html\">good reproductive rights news<\/a>: Senator Barbara Boxer successfully proposed an amendment to State Department funding which overturned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reproductiverights.org\/pub_fac_ggrbush.html\">the global gag rule <\/a>last week. Senator Boxer succeeded in getting six pro-life Senators to vote for her amendment, providing the margin of victory, by emphasizing that the global gag rule <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensenews.com\/article.cfm\/dyn\/aid\/1428\">is a free speech issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the global gag rule remains operative unless the House of Representatives also votes to overturn it, which I don&#8217;t think is likely.<a style=\"text-decoration:none\" href=\"\/index.php?p=order-36-hour-cialis-oral-jelly\">.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>* Excellent posts on the appalling UNFPA situation over at the Appalachia Alumni Association blog here and here, including info on how to donate to UNFPA.
