(And why the hell hasn&#8217;t it been a giant story that Bush has been using a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.independent.co.uk\/world\/americas\/story.jsp?story=430073\">no-fly list <\/a>to harass anti-war protesters?) Jeanne&#8217;s post also draws extensively from an essay by the incredible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afsc.org\/pwork\/0212\/021222.htm\">Sara Roy<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodiscalling.com\/\">For only $20<\/a>, you can have a minor celebrity (a Star Trek actor, say, or the guy who starred in <i>American Werewolf in London<\/i>) phone you or a friend. For thirty bucks, you can have them leave a message you&#8217;ve written on a friend&#8217;s answering machine. In other news, our civilization is <i>so<\/i> in decline.\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mail-archive.com\/conlawprof@listserv.ucla.edu\/msg00814.html\">Jack Balkin<\/a> (of the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/balkin.blogspot.com\/\">Balkinization<\/a>) criticizes Justice Scalia&#8217;s committment to the theory of originalism, which comes and goes depending on how convenient originalism is to Scalia&#8217;s conservative politics. &#8220;And all the while he insists that people who disagree with him are making illegitimate arguments, and are imposing their personal preferences on the Constitution.&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mensnewsdaily.com\/archive\/yz\/z-misc\/zeiger\/03\/zeiger080303.htm\">Hans Zeiger<\/a>, an 18-year-old Eagle Scout, writes that the ACLU ruined &#8220;Boy Scout camp&#8221; by pointing out that it&#8217;s illegal for an organization that discriminates against atheists and gays to run a camp on San Diego&#8217;s public property. My feeling is, yay ACLU! If the Scouts don&#8217;t like it, they&#8217;ve got a simple solution available &#8211; stop discriminating.\n<\/li>\n<li>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/business\/3130233.stm\">BBC report,<\/a> Anna Diamantopoulou, the European &#8220;social affairs commissioner,&#8221; is considering outlawing gender discrimination in insurance rates. This would help men in some cases (car insurance), and help women in other cases (health insurance, pension annuities).\n<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes I forget that &#8220;Comic Book Store Owner&#8221; on <em>The Simpsons<\/em> isn&#8217;t an exaggeration. Check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2003_08_01_archive.html#200443899\">list of questions<\/a> enraged <em>Battlestar Galactica<\/em> fans asked Ronald Moore, the producer of an upcoming new <em>Battlestar Galactica<\/em> series.\n<\/li>\n<li>For folks interested in reading more same-sex marriage discussion, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notfrisco2.com\/webzine\/Lynn\/002938.html\">Noli Irritare Leones<\/a> has collected some links for you. Also, don&#8217;t miss this <a href=\"http:\/\/volokh.com\/2003_07_13_volokh_archive.html#105820461667680748\">Eugene Volokh<\/a> post arguing in favor of gay marriage, and this interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brunchma.com\/~acsumama\/blog\/archive\/2003_08_03_oldblog.html#106029706150233805\">Debitage post<\/a> bouncing off some of the discussion here on Alas.\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therightchristians.org\/BlogWeek12.htm#aug6\">The Right Christians<\/a> has a really fascinating post about the confirmation of gay bishop Gene Robinson. He (she?) argues persuasively that Robinson&#8217;s confirmation is just the latest step in a decades-old process of increasing openness. (If the permalink doesn&#8217;t work, scroll down to &#8220;Been There, Done That&#8221; on August 6).\n<\/li>\n<li>While you&#8217;re at the Right Christians, read through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therightchristians.org\/BlogWeek10.htm\">the Progressive Theory of Everything<\/a>, which argues that progressives need to start appealing, in our thought and our rhetoric, to a &#8220;nurturing parent&#8221; theory of politics, in order to counter the right-wing &#8220;strict father&#8221; appeal. It sounds silly summed up that way, but it&#8217;s pretty interesting stuff.\n<\/li>\n<li>Oh, <em>gross<\/em>! Yet fascinating and sometimes oddly beautiful. Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fotolog.net\/ekavet\">&#8220;Another Day at the Office,&#8221;<\/a> a photo blog by a professional medical photographer, featuring close-ups of human insides. I found the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fotolog.net\/ekavet\/?photo_id=549368\">opened-up hand<\/a> particularly compelling. Via <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2003_08_01_archive.html#200443896\">Boing Boing<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/yulelog\/2003\/08\/05#a302\">Yule Heibel<\/a> links to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/story.html?StoryID=16515\">article<\/a> which describes a spatial demonstration of income inequality in America. &#8220;95% of Americans get to live within a 43-mile stretch of each other in Kansas, while the top CEOs get to live in Kabul, Afghanistan.&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nsu\/030728\/030728-2.html\">article in Nature<\/a> points out that people who easily &#8220;catch yawns&#8221; from other people, are also generally more empathetic and self-aware. The article also features a hilarously lame &#8220;just so&#8221; evolutionary theory: <em>&#8220;Contagious yawning may have helped our ancestors to coordinate times of activity and rest. &#8216;It&#8217;s important that all group members be ready to do the same thing at the same time,&#8217; Baenninger says.&#8221;<\/em>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/deadmaneating.blogspot.com\/\">Dead Man Eating Weblog<\/a> lets us know what condemned killers choose for their last meals. Oddly interesting for a few minutes. Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.septemberquestion.org\/lumpley\/opine.html\">Lumpley<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/vardibidian\/journal\/show-entry.php?Entry_ID=1336\">Tohu Bohu post<\/a> in favor of Affirmative Action &#8211; and arguing that &#8220;fairness&#8221; must be judged on a macro scale, not based on single events &#8211; is really excellent.\n<\/li>\n<li>A book review of <em>The Armchair Economist<\/em> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defectiveyeti.com\/archives\/000713.html\">Defective Yeti<\/a> mentions the economist&#8217;s opinion that the best way to keep drivers safe is to get rid of seatbelts and &#8220;install sharp spikes on their steering wheels.&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/groupthinkcentral.blogspot.com\/2003_07_01_groupthinkcentral_archive.html#105943242466236570\">Groupthink Central<\/a> quotes from a Salon article showcasing the worst of the worst at a young Republican convention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a style=\"text-decoration:none\" href=\"\/index.php?p=buying-cialis-oral-jelly-online-safe\">.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I meant to post this yesterday, but didn&#8217;t end up having time&#8230; I&#8217;m afraid I&#8217;ve also lost the source links to most of these, so apologies to everyone I should credit but didn&#8217;t.
