{"id":3920,"date":"2007-12-02T01:57:20","date_gmt":"2007-12-02T09:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/archives\/2007\/12\/02\/oxfam-israeli-collective-punishment-policy-may-create-water-crisis-in-gaza\/"},"modified":"2007-12-02T01:57:20","modified_gmt":"2007-12-02T09:17:08","slug":"oxfam-israeli-collective-punishment-policy-may-create-water-crisis-in-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=3920","title":{"rendered":"Oxfam: Israeli Collective Punishment Policy May Create Water Crisis In Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/news\/2007\/pr071121_gaza_public_health\">Oxfam<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Humanitarian agency Oxfam International today said there is an increasing risk to public health in Gaza as water and sanitation services begin to buckle under the strain of Israel\u2019s restrictions on fuel, vital maintenance goods and spare parts into Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oxfam International\u2019s partner the Coastal Municipalities Water Utilities (CMWU) 15% of Gaza\u2019s population \u2013 225,000 people \u2013 is not receiving an adequate amount of drinking water due to the lack of diesel.<\/p>\n<p>Oxfam is also worried at the latest reports of Israel\u2019s Attorney General\u2019s Office giving approval to its new Defense Ministry\u2019s plan to reduce the quantity of electricity delivered to the Gaza Strip. This decision comes on top of Israel\u2019s fuel reductions since 28 October 2007, which are having an immediate impact on the water and wastewater systems in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oxfam International Executive Director Jeremy Hobbs:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has to be an immediate resumption of fuel supplies to Gaza if we are to avoid a public health crisis. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and must not be used as a tool to collectively punish the population of Gaza. As international efforts increase to breathe new life into progress towards peace, the international community is ignoring Gaza\u2019s plight, allowing it to slip further into a crisis. Ordinary civilians in Gaza are being punished for crimes they have not committed, in clear violation of international humanitarian law. This illegal policy of collective punishment must stop at once.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s Supreme Court recently placed a temporary injunction against Israel cutting back Gaza&#8217;s electricity supply, which is good.
