The article cites the curious phenomenon that professional baseball players are much more likely to be born in August than July. The author theorizes that August babies aren&#8217;t naturally better at baseball &#8212; they&#8217;re just older than their peers, because Aug. 1 is the normal cut-off date for youth baseball leagues.<\/p>\n<p>The author concludes that this structural benefit for the August-born is a &#8220;small advantage can have an impact that lasts a lifetime.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which reminds me of this old cartoon of mine:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zmag.org\/cartoons\/toons\/\/1052.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Dollars and Sense blog: Peter Wagner of the Prison Policy Initiative sent us this link to a recent article in Slate magazine.
