But is a person\u2019s weight really a reliable indicator of overall health?<\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, medical research is showing that it isn\u2019t. Despite  concerns about an obesity epidemic, there is growing evidence that our obsession about weight as a primary measure of health may be misguided.<\/p>\n<p>Last week <a href=\"http:\/\/archinte.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/168\/15\/1617\" target=\"_blank\">a report in The Archives of Internal Medicine<\/a> compared weight and cardiovascular risk factors among a representative sample of more than 5,400 adults. The data suggest that half of overweight people and one-third of obese people are \u201cmetabolically healthy.\u201d That means that despite their excess pounds, many overweight and obese adults have healthy levels of \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and other risks for heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, about one out of four slim people \u2014 those who fall into the \u201chealthy\u201d weight range \u2014 actually have at least two cardiovascular risk factors typically associated with obesity, the study showed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bang you just heard was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministe.us\/blog\/archives\/2007\/05\/25\/meme-roth-wants-fat-people-to-hide-in-their-homes-lest-they-get-airs-that-they-belong-in-public-without-showing-the-proper-shame\/\">MeMe Roth&#8217;s<\/a> head exploding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the New York Times: Often, a visit to the doctor\u2019s office starts with a weigh-in.
