As some will remember, I used to have an archive of my political cartoons on Z Magazine, but for some reason Z nuked that portion of their website earlier this year. So I’ve made a new archive, which is located at leftycartoons.com<\/a>. Please check it out.<\/p>\n

My newest Dollars and Sense Magazine<\/em> cartoon is up at their site<\/a>. They were nice enough to give me two-thirds of a page to work with this time, so I was able to do a more extended storyline than usual:<\/p>\n

TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON<\/strong><\/p>\n

This comic has eleven panels. Above the panels, title lettering says “Free Market Man” in a style reminiscent of old-fashioned superhero logos. Below that more lettering, in a bouncy old-fashioned bubble font, says “in “Health Care Adventure.”<\/p>\n

PANEL 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

This panel shows Free Market Man, a balding, middle-aged guy wearing a domino mask and a cape and superhero costume, seated at a table, reading a newspaper, with a coffee mug in front of him. His costume has “FMM” in big letters on his chest. There’s a window behind him.<\/p>\n

CAPTION: Free Market Man is reading the paper!<\/p>\n

FMM (thought balloon): Big government sure is too big…<\/p>\n

PANEL 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

CAPTION: When suddenly!<\/p>\n

There’s a “Blam!” sound effect, and a bullet comes through the window, knocking a big hole in the top of FMM’s head. Blood drops fly out of the hole.<\/p>\n

FMM: Hey, that smarts!<\/p>\n

PANEL 3<\/strong><\/p>\n

FMM leads out of the window, smiling and waving at a cowboy. Blood drops continue to come out of the hole in FMM’s head. The cowboy is wearing a mask and cape and holding a smoking gun.<\/p>\n

COWBOY: Aw, heck. Sorry about that, Free Market Man.<\/p>\n

FMM: No sweat! Mistakes happen, Right-To-Bear-And-Carry Man.<\/p>\n

PANEL 4<\/strong><\/p>\n

FMM walks along a sidewalk; there’s a row of houses in the background. FMM talks to himself cheerfully. \u00a0Blood drops continue to come out of the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

FMM: No public hospital for ME! This is a perfect opportunity to apply Free Market principles to medical care!<\/p>\n

FMM: I’ll visit the best head wound doctors in the city! They’ll compete for my business!<\/p>\n

PANEL 5<\/strong><\/p>\n

FMM stands at a counter; a woman on the other side of the counter, wearing nurse scrubs, is looking \u00a0at a computer screen. FMM is angrily waving his arms and shouting. \u00a0Blood drops continue to spout from the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

CAPTION: But then!<\/p>\n

NURSE: The doctor can see you in five weeks.<\/p>\n

FMM: What IS this, COMMIE CANADA?<\/p>\n

PANEL 6<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another doctor’s office, another nurse. FMM looks dejected. Blood drops continue to spout from the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

NURSE: Your insurance won’t let you be treated here.<\/p>\n

FMM: Can I pay cash.<\/p>\n

NURSE: Do you have $50,000?<\/p>\n

FMM: …no.<\/p>\n

PANEL 7<\/strong><\/p>\n

A close-up of FMM, looking determined and a bit angry, shaking a fist in the air. \u00a0Blood drops continue to spout from the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

FMM: No bureaucrat stands between me and my choice of doctor! I’ll go to a different insurance company!<\/p>\n

PANEL 8<\/strong><\/p>\n

FMM is being talked to by a man sitting behind a desk and wearing a suit and tie. \u00a0Blood drops continue to spout from the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

MAN: A hole in the head is a “pre-existing condition.” Please go away now.<\/p>\n

PANEL 9<\/strong><\/p>\n

FMM, dejected, sits on the curb, his head in his hands, the sun low in the sky behind him. Blood drops continue to spout from the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

FMM: I’m so confused! Why can’t I get health care? Is it wrong to expect sick people to act like engaged consumers?<\/p>\n

PANEL 10<\/strong><\/p>\n

A longer shot of FMM sitting on the same curb, but now looking downward, his arm hanging limply. \u00a0Blood drops continue to spout from the hole in FMM’s head.<\/p>\n

FMM (thought): It’s my own fault… I should have been richer… bought better insurance… I’m so tired…<\/p>\n

PANEL 11<\/strong><\/p>\n
