{"id":5432,"date":"2008-11-11T19:37:32","date_gmt":"2008-11-12T02:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=5432"},"modified":"2008-11-11T19:37:32","modified_gmt":"2008-11-12T02:57:20","slug":"who-weeps-for-the-concern-troll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=5432","title":{"rendered":"Who Weeps for the Concern Troll?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael B\u00e9rub\u00e9 tells the heart-wrenching story of those most devastated by Obama&#8217;s election: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelberube.com\/index.php\/weblog\/democratic_concern_trolls\/\" target=\"_blank\">the professional concern trolls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cObama\u2019s election is a historic event,\u201d said former Clinton advisor Lanny Davis, co-chair of the newly-formed Fox News Democrat Caucus.\u00a0 \u201cBut I\u2019m concerned that Obama may have raised expectations too high.\u00a0 What will happen when he has to face down the left-wing Congressional leadership or the Daily Kos brigades, who will undoubtedly try to goad him into adopting a narrowly partisan agenda?\u00a0 I worry that Obama won\u2019t have the courage to cut those people loose when he needs to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Amy Sullivan agreed, adding, \u201cI\u2019m hearing a lot of concerns about where the Democratic party goes from here.\u00a0 Specifically, I\u2019m concerned that fewer Democrats are going to be willing to take seriously the concerns of people who want to reach out across the aisle and establish a bipartisan consensus that abortion is wrong.\u00a0 What will happen when the party is no longer concerned about these people\u2019s concerns?\u00a0 Based on what I\u2019m hearing, I have to worry that it will back itself into increasingly radical and unpopular positions on this important issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other members of the Concerned Democrats focused more on the 2008 electoral map than on \u201chot-button\u201d social issues.\u00a0 Democratic strategist David \u201cMudcat\u201d Saunders, in a plenary address to the group, noted that Obama had managed to make inroads into traditionally Republican southern states such as Virginia and North Carolina, while sweeping Ohio, Florida, Iowa , and even Indiana, which had not voted for a Democrat since 1864.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a real problem looming here,\u201d said Saunders, \u201ceven if most Democrats don\u2019t want to face it right now.\u00a0 As the Republican party increasingly becomes the party of old white people living in Appalachia, the Ozarks, and the barren windswept areas of the Louisiana Purchase, Democrats are going to be less and less inclined to listen to advisors who insist that the Democratic Party must choose leaders who are white male Southern Baptists familiar with barbeque, NASCAR, and the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/moderateleft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/mudcat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 261px; height: 116px;\" src=\"http:\/\/moderateleft.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/mudcat.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"1\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"257\" height=\"107\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Truly, it is a conundrum. Now that Democrats have won a healthy majority of House and Senate seats, not to mention the presidency (with a black guy named Barack Hussein Obama), how will the concern trolls be able to convince Democrats of the dangers of supporting racial equality, legal abortion, or any rights for\u00a0LGBT people? How will they be able to warn of the danger of asking the rich to pay somewhat higher taxes, or the electoral catastrophe that surely faces any candidate willing to state his opposition to the Iraq war?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what will happen to the Democrats if they stop listening to the concern trolls, but if we do, I&#8217;m sure it will be bad.
