{"id":5536,"date":"2008-11-20T10:46:46","date_gmt":"2008-11-20T18:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=5536"},"modified":"2008-11-20T10:46:46","modified_gmt":"2008-11-20T18:06:34","slug":"waxman-beats-dingell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=5536","title":{"rendered":"Waxman beats Dingell!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Intra-Democrat fights are rarely this sweet. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/bloomberg\/20081120\/pl_bloomberg\/agaqie9o_gnw;_ylt=AoNazyS.QalVpD4qS3tZr5Gs0NUE\">Waxman beats Dingell<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Representative Henry Waxman won the chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee, ousting John Dingell, the longest-serving member of the U.S. House.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-admin\/post-new.php\">Shakesville<\/a>, Oddjob comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>THAT&#8217;S CHANGE!! &#8230;[T]he single largest reason why car fuel efficiency standards have not been meaningfully raised since the 1970&#8217;s is because <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Dingell\">Dingell<\/a> has been the chairman of the House committee most responsible for such legislation, and he&#8217;s from Detroit.  <a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Waxman\">Waxman<\/a> is a liberal and from California, the state where smog from automobiles has been the biggest air pollution problem.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This fight has been going on for years, but before now Dingell has held his ground. From a <a href=\"http:\/\/gristmill.grist.org\/story\/2006\/8\/2\/134832\/8334\">Greenwire report in 2006<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Climate, Pelosi said, is &#8220;a critical part of our agenda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi referred specifically to a global-warming bill from Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), which many environmentalists have identified as one of the few measures on Capitol Hill to take the steps necessary to avert irreversible changes to the Earth&#8217;s climate. Last month, Pelosi cosponsored the measure.<\/p>\n<p>But Dingell thinks the Waxman proposal goes too far too fast. &#8220;I have reason to believe,&#8221; he said, &#8220;it&#8217;s on the extreme side.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sane legislative responses to global warming are now much, much more likely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intra-Democrat fights are rarely this sweet.
