It doesn&#8217;t seem to have a home in the current market, so I thought I&#8217;d post it here instead.<\/p>\n<p>Mother&#8217;s Remedies<\/p>\n<p>by Rachel Swirsky<\/p>\n<p>Kitchen bare, the children&#8217;s stomachs ached<br \/>\nrumbling with involuntary fast.<br \/>\n&#8220;Hush dears,&#8221; mother called. &#8220;No need to fret.<br \/>\nElves have come to cook us a repast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They warbled love songs to the pantry<br \/>\n&#8217;til water coyly boiled hot.<br \/>\nPotatoes spiced and diced themselves.<br \/>\nCarrots swooned into the pot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With tears of joy, onions peeled their skins.<br \/>\nThyme and basil jumped in to swim laps.<br \/>\nLeaves of cabbage lined up single file<br \/>\nand dived inside like girls in bathing caps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not to be outdone a fleet of gnomes<br \/>\nbubbled up a brine of salt and wine,<br \/>\nmoonlight, mumbled prayers, and tangled hair,<br \/>\nsocks and rocks and clocks and dusty twine.<\/p>\n<p>They attached a pulley to my spoon.<br \/>\nHo heave ho, they yanked it to and fro.<br \/>\nFlash! Smash! Crash! and look, a gourmet roast<br \/>\ngolden flesh alchemic&#8217;ly aglow.<\/p>\n<p>Cupboard pixies in a baking pan<br \/>\nfixed a ten-tiered cherry cake so sweet<br \/>\njust a slice would make the meanest grump<br \/>\ngrin and cheer and dance along the street.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mother beamed. &#8220;Can\u2019t you smell it all?<br \/>\nBubbling broth, fresh apples, bread and cream?<br \/>\nRecall the scent as you drift to sleep<br \/>\nand let it fill your bellies with sweet dreams.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few years ago, I set out to write a poem that was cute and funny and rhyming.
