Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewsullivan.com\/index.php?dish_inc=archives\/2004_04_18_dish_archive.html#108260321502103385\">Andrew Sullivan <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomtomarry.org\/document.asp?doc_id=1443\">Darren Spedale <\/a>(who has been using a Fulbright scholarship to study this exact question in Scandinavia) suggest that the Scandinavian sky is firmly in place.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/509296.html\">From Amsterdam<\/a>, the news (in the <i>Boston Globe<\/i>) seems pretty similar:\n<div class=\"snip\">Thus far, specialists in domestic law, legislators, and some religious commentators say there is no empirical evidence of damage to the institution. For example, divorce rates are no higher, and there is no sign that conventional couples are shunning marriage.<\/div>\n<p>There&#8217;s also some interesting thoughts in favor of a gradual strategy for achieving marriage equality. I&#8217;m not sure that the religious opposition they faced there is really comparable to what we face here in the USA, though.<\/p>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.365gay.com\/newscon04\/04\/042104vaBan.htm\">Meanwhile, in Virginia<\/a>, they&#8217;ve passed a new law which not only bans gay marriage, civil unions, and contracts attempting to make marriage-like privileges between same-sex couples; it may actually outlaw all contracts between any two people of the same sex. That possible mistake aside, the extent to which some folks insist that gays must not have <i>any <\/i>rights at all is stunning. (See also Bean&#8217;s previous post regarding Michigan.)\n<li>Two transgendered folks stage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.365gay.com\/newscon04\/04\/042304transDemo.htm\">a tree-sit-in protest<\/a>, apparently to get their parents to acknowledge their relationship.\n<li>In the <i>Advocate<\/i>, David Ehrenstein reflects on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advocate.com\/html\/stories\/912\/912_ehrenstein.asp\">&#8220;coming out&#8221;<\/a> over the last half-century or so of American gay culture. Includes a painful showbiz anecdote from <i>West Side Story<\/i>, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. (Okay, I&#8217;m a bit obsessed with Sondheim.)\n<li>Brad DeLong points out that, in Bush Treasury Department lingo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.j-bradford-delong.net\/movable_type\/2004_archives\/000676.html\">&#8220;hardworking&#8221; means &#8220;earns $200,000 or more a year.&#8221; <\/a>No, really &#8211; that&#8217;s what they use the term to mean.
