{"id":896,"date":"2004-06-08T00:00:29","date_gmt":"2004-06-08T08:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/archives\/2004\/06\/08\/just-another-iwf-hypocrisy\/"},"modified":"2004-06-08T00:00:29","modified_gmt":"2004-06-08T08:00:29","slug":"just-another-iwf-hypocrisy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/?p=896","title":{"rendered":"Just Another IWF Hypocrisy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The IWF has criticized Mary Koss&#8217; study of rape incidence over and over for being &#8220;commissioned by <i>Ms. Magazine<\/i>.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/archives\/2004\/05\/03\/the-iwf-on-mary-koss-rape-research\/\">I&#8217;ve written about this before<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What I didn&#8217;t realize until last week (when I was researching <a href=\"http:\/\/amptoons.poliblog.com\/blog\/000853.html\">this post<\/a>) is that the <a href=\"http:\/\/iwf.org\/issues\/issues_detail.asp?ArticleID=355\">IWF has financed a study <\/a>conducted by the think tank The Institute for American Values (IAV). (The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanvalues.org\/html\/a-pr_hooking_up.html\">study <\/a>is the source of much of the talk about the alleged &#8220;hook-up culture&#8221; on college campuses today).<\/p>\n<p>So, the IWF commissioned a study &#8211; just like <i>Ms<\/i>. They selected researchers, just like <i>Ms<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, wasn&#8217;t the IWF claiming that there was something wrong about doing that?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are a few differences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Koss&#8217; study design was published and presented at conferences years before <i>Ms<\/i>&#8216;s involvement began &#8211; proof that <i>Ms <\/i>didn&#8217;t influence the study&#8217;s basic design. The &#8220;hook up&#8221; study design was not published before the IWF got involved.\n<li>Unlike Koss&#8217; study (supervised and funded by the National Institute for Mental Health), the &#8220;hook up&#8221; study was not independently supervised by a neutral scientific institution.\n<li>Unlike Koss&#8217; study, the &#8220;hook up&#8221; study did not pass through an academic peer review process before being published.<\/ul>\n<p>So either the IWF <i>doesn&#8217;t<\/i> believe that studies are corrupted by being associated with an ideological group, and they were just <i>pretending <\/i>to believe that to dis Koss&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Or, they <i>do <\/i>believe that studies are corrupted by association, and they intentionally set out to make a corrupt study.<\/p>\n<p>I really don&#8217;t see a third possibility.<\/p>\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n<p>P.S. Just to be clear, this post is not criticizing the &#8220;hook up&#8221; study. The study is good or bad on its own merits; that the IWF funded it doesn&#8217;t matter to me.
