I haven&#8217;t come up with one it can&#8217;t guess. It&#8217;s darn good at guessing Buffy characters, too.\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contemporaryfamilies.org\/public\/discussion.php\">Council on Contemporary Families <\/a>argues that marriage is not a cure-all for poverty. They would rather focus on providing college educations and career prospects to single mothers. &#8220;Coontz and Folbre point out that college-educated single mothers who work full-time actually have poverty rates lower than the national average.&#8221; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contemporaryfamilies.org\/public\/briefing.html\">full paper <\/a>is worth reading as an antidote for a lot of the &#8220;marriage initiative&#8221; discussions going on nowadays.\n<li>One of my favorite comic books, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightspeedpress.com\/index.php\">Finder, has a website <\/a>which includes a few complete sample issues.\n<li>New to my blogroll: <a href=\"http:\/\/professorkim.blogspot.com\/\">Professor Kim&#8217;s News Notes<\/a>. Genuinely excellent blog with a focus on &#8221; race, class, religion, gender and sexuality in the news.&#8221; There are loads of excellent posts there, but this <a href=\"http:\/\/professorkim.blogspot.com\/2004_05_30_professorkim_archive.html#108648448030220197\">disturbing memory from election day, 1980<\/a>, is especially striking.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministe.us\/blog\/archives\/000997.php\">There is still a gender wage gap<\/a>. Excellent post at Feministe, springing off of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/06\/10\/business\/10scene.html?ex=1402286400&#038;en=b93735dbb93900c3&#038;ei=5007&#038;partner=USERLAND\">a <i>New York Times <\/i>article<\/a>. (And hey, while I&#8217;m at it, I&#8217;ll plug <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amptoons.com\/blog\/000350.html\">my own series on the gender wage gap<\/a>).\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/06\/08\/health\/08cont.html?ex=1402027200&#038;en=6ecd68bf6d220ede&#038;ei=5007&#038;partner=USERLAND\">Is the &#8220;Fat Epidemic&#8221; a statistical illusion?<\/a> From the <i>Times<\/i>:\n<div class=\"snip\">But Dr. Jeffrey Friedman, an obesity researcher at Rockefeller University, argues that contrary to popular opinion, national data do not show Americans growing uniformly fatter. Instead, he says, the statistics demonstrate clearly that while the very fat are getting fatter, thinner people have remained pretty much the same.[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>But Dr. Friedman said he was outraged by the acceptance of what he sees as a hurtful myth, one that encourages people to believe that if you are fat, it is your fault.[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Friedman points to careful statistical analyses of the changes in Americans&#8217; body weights from 1991 to today by Dr. Katherine Flegal of the National Center for Health Statistics. At the lower end of the weight distribution, nothing has changed, not even by a few pounds. As you move up the scale, a few additional pounds start to show up, but even at midrange, people today are just 6 or 7 pounds heavier than they were in 1991. Only with the massively obese, the very top of the distribution, is there a substantial increase in weight, about 25 to 30 pounds, Dr. Flegal reported.<\/p><\/div>\n<li>An article in the <i>Washington Post <\/i>about &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/ac2\/wp-dyn\/A14386-2003Jun19?language=printer\">Whiteness Studies.&#8221; <\/a>Wish they&#8217;d had that at my college.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/professorkim.blogspot.com\/2004_06_06_professorkim_archive.html#108681988584034640\">Professor Kim <\/a>discusses how gay-marriage bans will effect the marriage rights of intersexuals.
