Overwhelmingly, Americans prefer cutting government spending in order to balance the deficit (62%), compared to only 5% for raising taxes and 24% who favored doing both.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s a big difference between general and specifics. According to this poll, only 5% favor raising taxes, but <strike>62%<\/strike> 59% favor raising taxes on households making over $250,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the huge majority in favor of cutting government programs dissolves once Americans were asked which programs should have funding cut:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/democracyinamerica\/2010\/04\/economistyougov_polling\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cutting_govt_poll.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"cutting_govt_poll\" width=\"297\" height=\"400\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cutting_govt_poll.jpg 297w, https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/cutting_govt_poll-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So a strong majority agrees on cutting foreign aid &#8212; but, alas, foreign aid makes up less than 1% of the federal budget. That&#8217;s like cutting the household grocery bill by cutting out half a candy bar every other month.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives favor cutting government programs to balance the deficit. But (and this is the conundrum part) conservatives also claim that for Congress to make policy that most Americans <a href=\"http:\/\/potluckbloggers.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/20\/this-and-no-other-is-the-root-from-which-a-tyrant-springs\/\">disagree <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/the-maverick-conservative.blogspot.com\/2010\/02\/i-am-almost-finished-with-biography-of.html\">with is<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2010\/03\/the-future-after-health-care\/37799\/\">virtually<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanforddaily.com\/2010\/03\/31\/get-it-right-the-healthcare-%E2%80%9Crage%E2%80%9D\/\">tyranny<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since passing any policy that doesn&#8217;t poll well is tyranny &#8212; and cutting (say) Social Security polls far <em>less <\/em>well than the Affordable Care Act &#8212; what deficit-cutting measures <em>can <\/em>conservatives favor?<\/p>\n<p>Other than raising taxes on households with incomes over $250,000, that is.<\/p>\n<p>(Hat tip: <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2010\/04\/chart-day-cutting-deficit\">Mr Drum<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Update: This graph from <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/81684\/the-futility-of-budget-cuts\">Annie Lowrey<\/a> plots both what Americans say should be cut, and what percentage of the federal budget is spent in each area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/81684\/the-futility-of-budget-cuts\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/vspending.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"vspending\" width=\"432\" height=\"331\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9887\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/vspending.jpg 432w, https:\/\/amptoons.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/vspending-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economist polled Americans about the deficit, government spending, and the like.
