Lynching in Alabama?

Ben of Hungryblues has a disturbing story of a possible lynching in Alabama being covered up by local authorities. I’m a little leery of this story precisely because it has been given so little coverage, making it hard to be sure what happened; but that’s all the more reason the story should be given more attention.

I wouldn’t be all that surprised. My sister lives in East Texas, she said there was a sickening amount of support for the killers in the Jasper incident.

Just to play the optimist, there isn’t a lot of evidence either way… antecdotal evidence of one person interviewing “observers” who were not named or catalouged… and the low likelyhood of their being a crowd at 6:15 in the morning. I didn’t think many suicides were covered in the paper, especially not more than locally.

I dunno. I think suicide is just as likely as the more sinister possibility. I have not seen or heard anything compelling either way.

It seems like a wait and see to me.
Why would people lynching someone take off the shoelaces and then string them through the pants to tie it up? That doesn’t seem to make sense to me either. And yeah, you could climb the tree with just shoes, and how many people NEED their pants held up with a belt anymore?

I think until more is known the less guesses the better.

They should have something in the paper with an “any information on this matter please call XXX–XXX-XXXX”

I do think that the police may be uninclined to investigate, perhaps incompetent to investigate, and that the key evidence would have been at the scene. This may never be resolved.
