- New to the blogroll: The Secret of This Girl, an enjoyable blog by a british feminist.
- Speaking of the blogroll, I’ve cleaned it up a bit and made many changes in the past several days (deleting dead blogs, adding new blogs, reoganizing a bit). Also, check out the new “partial birth abortion” catagory, containing loads of “Alas” PBA-related posts in a single link.
- An interesting essay in “Brain, Child: The magazine for thinking mothers” asks if there is any common interest that all mothers can be said to share. Via Arts and Letters Daily.
- Biz Femmes Speak! review of “The Corporation” the movie, comparing the recent documentary film to the book it’s based on. According to Biz Femmes, the book argues that our legal system is structured in such a way that makes corporate evil-doing inevitable; the movie, which (according to the reviewer) takes a more simplistic “corporations do evil things” approach, sounds less interesting.
- Atrios points out that Sheri Drew, the women the Republcan party chose to deliver the opening invocation at their convention, has compared supporting same-sex marriage to supporting Hitler. No, really.
- Interesting New Yorker character study about someone who gave away millions of dollars to charity – and then, feeling he hadn’t done enough, decided to give away a kidney. Via wrongheaded.
- Ms Musings reports on MIT’s first female president – and on women, Title IX and sciences generally.
- Astarte of XX pulls a lot of US goverment data together for a fabulous post on Pay Equity and Social Constructs. Well worth reading for anyone interested in the pay gap issue.
- Also on XX, Trish Wilson points out that – contrary to what what marriage movement scholars like Elizabeth Marquardt often suggest – fatherlessness isn’t as horrifying as it’s been cracked up to be.
- Unfutz once again has a weekly report of what the electoral college prognostigators are saying. It’s a good week for Bush, who is still behind but is making solid gains in the polls. I predict he’ll pull ahead next week, courtesy of an adoring media and the post-convention bounce.
Immigrants who are legal according to the "I support LEGAL immigration" crowd: 1) Hot asian women who date older divorced…
Hey,
I didn’t know I was that far right to you Amp!
I want a scale!!! How far in numbers am I from you? Whose the center? (How does one judge).
Sort of joking, sort of curious.
Yes, I had read that article in the New Yorker.
He gave away $45 million, then his kidney, and considered giving up the other one and living on dialysis.
In my mind, he could have done even more good in perfect health going out and making another $45 million, and giving that to charity. Honestly, he did save one life with the kidney, but I bet overall who would have saved more lives if he had kept it and spent the time making money.
Oy, you deleted the “Frequent commenters blogs” section. It’s been nice hangin’ out there for a while.
The political scale divisions are pretty much a joke, starting with the idea “what if I was the political center.” It seemed to me that you’re a bit to the right of folks like Kevin Drum (for instance, you’re leaning towards being pro-life), so that’s why I put you as “even further right.”
If it gives offense, though, I’ll be happy to move you. I am nothing if not willing to give in without a fight. :-)
Jimmy, I’ll be glad to put you on the blogroll somewhere else. Where would you say you compare to me politically – about the same as me, a bit to my right, or a bir further to my right?
The “frequent contributors” thing was just too much of a pain to maintain – sometimes past contributors stop contributing, sometimes someone who does contribute a bunch has a blog but I’m not aware of it, etc..
I hope it didn’t sound like I was complaining. I fully understand your supressing that section, as I myself try to restrict my blogroll to blogs I really read.
As I said (and, if I recall correctly, told you back then), it was a very nice surprise when you blogrolled me, because I never specifically asked for it (for a long time, Kevin Moore had been the first and only one to do so; many thanks to him, you, Sheelzebub, Ms. Lauren and Roxanne).
On the other hand, I always considered my own so-called blogging a temporary personal experiment and never had the illusion that anyone besides my best friend could really take any interest in my posts, given that my writing is near to unextant and that I don’t have any update schedule (I do think, however, that I provided a few valuable links and quotes on varied matters, and definitely enjoy being able to post in different languages).
It takes me a longer time than you can imagine to put a single sentence in not too improper English, and I am writing a thesis (in French) I wish to finish in December. Therefore, it would be very presomptuous of me to ask from you or any other “serious” blogger to put/keep me on your roll. As for my political position, I’d say I (a long-time Sowshalist, to put it simply) feel close to most of the opinions you express, taking in account that I’ve never been in America and have an European (France and Greece) an Asiatic (China) background. In fact, you “converted” me on issues like Affirmative action and Same-sex marriage, and, most importantly, on the realisation that Feminism is much more than a subcategory of social change theory.
For what it’s worth, I remember that I ended as slightly more “Libertarian” than you in the Deltoid Political Compass, but in the same “Left” column. But, given its multilingual and heteroclit nature, perhaps the only section Zhengming 正名 fits in would be the “Alas, unpigeonholeable” one.
Then again, thank you for asking, but, frankly, I think it is natural that you want to have a more focused blogroll.
Looks a bit confused, I’m afraid, but hopefully the main meaning gets through.
(I had to spell ‘Sowshalist’ the Linton Kwesi Johnson way, because part of the conventional spelling is “questionable content”.)
I was basically joking, but was interested in how you formed your scale, even if only loosely!
I really don’t see myself as far to the right; such an assessment would shock my parents who see us, my dh and I was pretty much left wing liberals. However, I have found myself edging more to the right lately. Where you put me is fine; it is your blog for goodness sake!
And an interesting discussion; if I were the center, you would definitely be to the left of me, but I’ve a friend (memequeen) who I think would be left of you, and plenty of people who would be right of me (such as spiced sass)
Another curious question; who is to the left of you?
And yeah, I’m going to blog about this.
At least you’re on the blogroll, Rachel Ann. :)
An interesting article that trounces your “courtesy of an adoring media” comment.
Hey, I asked! I’m shameless!
I really don’t mind where I am; well, if I were on the “IDIOT’S ROLL” I guess I would mind. I just thought it interesting; where and how does one see oneself in the blogverse.
