Police officers responded to a family’s complaint that their diabetic son may have been in danger from driving without taking his medicine by running him off the road into an interstate highway median and shooting him to death, the family says.” Yipes. The cops claim that he was trying to run them down, but the family says that the cops own videotapes prove that the car wasn’t in motion.

Only in New York: “Because of an editing error, an obituary on Sunday and in some copies on Monday about Mel Gussow, a theater critic and reporter for The New York Times, referred incorrectly to the Greenwich Village house next to his that was destroyed in 1970 by explosives belonging to the radical political group the Weathermen. The building was a town house, not a brownstone.” By the way, although he died years ago, Mr. Gussow’s obituary for Elizabeth Taylor was published just this week.

  27. Not a link, but just to mention: My favorite new TV show is called “Misfits.” It’s a British superhero show — well, sort of marginally superheroes, maybe — and it has characters who are really amazing assholes, and foul language, and interesting faces, and it’s a lot of fun.

If Sucker Punch is leaving an awful taste in your mouth, Hobo with a Shotgun came out in limited Canadian release this weekend, and could be a good palette cleanser. Gorn up the wazoo, with some undercurrent themes of the war on the underclass and a fairly capable sidekick-come-heroine (not saying the films gender roles are a huge feminist victory, but I’d wager they’re better than Sucker Punch). Also, Rutger Hauer’s grounded performance gives all the other actors free reign to go batshit nuts, which is awesome.

The trouble with taxing the rich. Not the “we’ll go Galt you looting looters” trouble you might expect to hear about from me or the WSJ, a different trouble.

  3. Lucy says:

When I first saw ads for Sucker Punch, I thought, “Okay, so it’s a bubblegum women in prison film?” It looks like it’s not even that. That’s tragic, and scary. Cassie’s trolls are so predictable.

I’ve tried to comment a couple times, but it hasn’t gone through.

More on the Alpha workshop, now that I’ve made the comment happen:

Alpha’s really important to me, as everyone who talks to me knows. I love seeing how the students change over the ten days of the workshop– sometimes it’s realizing that writing is a thing people do rather than a thing Mystic Beings do, sometimes it’s a new understanding of social justice through SF, sometimes it’s sitting up straighter and not apologizing for having ideas.
