“8”: A Play about the Fight for Marriage Equality

Though the proponents of Proposition 8 went to court (successfully) to prevent the Prop 8 trial from being broadcast, we do still have access to the full trial transcripts. Using these transcripts, Rob Reiner (who should stop saying that marriage equality is the last piece of the civil rights puzzle) and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (of Milk) put together a play, ‘8’ containing selected excerpts of the trial and interviews with some of the primary participants.

The cast includes Martin Sheen, Jamie Lee Curtis, George Cloony, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon, Jane Lynch (as Maggie Gallagher!), John C. Reilly (as David Blankenhorn!), Matthew Morrison, George Takei, and plenty of others that someone less culturally illiterate than I would recognize.

But surely you recognized George Takai?

    That was awesome.

Jane Lynch was hilarious, and yet, faithful to her role.

I read Judge Walker’s decision when it came out, and this was right in line. It’s going to be interesting to watch, at the Supreme Court level. If the rule that same-sex couples have no right to marry it will be fascinating to see the tortured logic.

To paraphrase an old housemate of mine (regarding a different performer):

I would pay $50 to watch Jane Lynch belch into a microphone for ten minutes, and would leave a satisfied customer.

Well, she was playing Maggie Gallagher, so you essentially got your wish.
