Vote democrat and non-white men will rape your white daughter

At least, that’s the message Republicans in New York seem to be sending their constituents.

  1. Daran says:

I long ago ceased to be shocked by the Republicans, but the nausea never goes away.

  2. Tuomas says:

It is crude and amateurish. Not that I have a problem with some seriously un-PC questions about race and crime (and discussion of them), but this is sort of vague, sneaky and not really conductive of anything to a) reduce crime
    b) improve race relations.

What is “family values” in this instance even supposed to mean, anyway?

  3. Sailorman says:

I have to say I’m with some of the posters on the feministe site: The hand looks white to me (on my screen, anyway); it’s about the same shade as my hand. So I don’t really see the racial aspect, though it’s otherwise a fairly stupid ad.

  4. RonF says:

All I can say is that when I first saw this ad, it didn’t say like “White woman/black man” to me. If I think about it, it looks like a Caucasian’s hand to me; I would think a black man’s hand would be much darker as a matter of generality.

So I’m not going to support a cry of “racism”. I do have to say, though, that I don’t understand the point of the ad in the first place. It does look as though this woman is being assaulted; what that has to do with family values is beyond me.

  5. I would probably have interpreted it as being anti-Mexican or anti-Arab or anti-someone else brown rather than black. Just as racist.

  6. Republicans are right: vote green party or the socialist party…

  7. Antigone says:

I’m going to go with the Arab hand, but I really doubt it’s white.

  8. mythago says:

Whatever it is, it’s the “those perverts will engage in sex acts that you are repressing your own urge to engage in” thing all over again.

The literature I get from the Republican party and allied groups here in California never ceases to amaze me. It might as well say HI! WE THINK YOU’RE SEMI-LITERATE AND EASILY FRIGHTENED! on it.

  9. Reb says:

I don’t have any idea what race the hand actually is, but my guess is that it was designed to be just dark enough that anyone who has racial fears can project them, while the people who designed it can still say, “Nuh-uh, it’s caucasian!” and dodge accusationis of racism. But even without the race aspect, it’s a disturbing image.

  10. Kai Jones says:

The skin on my hands is as much darker than the skin on my face (my hands get more sun) as the skin in that photo. I don’t see it as racist.

  11. Decnavda says:

My intial reaction was that the hand looked white, and therefor the ad was not racist. The only reason I doubt my judgment here is that if the ad is not playing to racist fears, I honestly can think of what the point of the image *would* be. They can not actually be trying to convience people that Democrats care less about violence against women than Republicans, can they?

  12. Petar says:

No, but the image creates a bad feeling, and if they can make people associate it
with Democrats, at any level, it’s a win. As for the hand, it is much lighter than
mine, or that of most people who aren’t afraid of the sun.

  13. lauren says:

I think this image creates more than just a bad feeling.

The assault of this woman and ‘family values’ are discursively tied together. This is yet another example of woman’s bodies representing honour, family, virtue etc rather than having meaning themselves. The message is that women assaulted by men are no longer ‘virtuous’ and therfore they are ‘destroyed’ objects. This is offensive and tiresome.

  14. Deanna says:

Just thought I’d let you know that I ran across the source of the photo… it’s stock on istockphoto.com, and is — scarily enough– one of the first hits if you search for “abuse” or “intimidation.”
