Open Thread for November 23rd

I’m once again buried under deadlines, and expect to be pretty much a non-blogger until sometime in March. The good news is, all this translates (if nothing goes awry) to having a nice, 140-page Hereville volume in bookstores a year from now.

Meanwhile, you can leave links, comments, or whatever else you’d like on this thread! Self-linking is welcome.

What are people doing for Thanksgiving? I’ll be having some friends over for dinner (including our own Jake Squid).

Not sure about thanksgiving. Still blogging about the trial of the officer including the defense’s line of questioning of one victim which apparently is among the lines of sex workers can’t be victims of sexual assault.

Interesting responses to my recent bloggings especially from police. I did have an interesting discussion about the issue of coercion and whether sexual contact between a woman and an onduty officer could be consensual with the detectives on the case and the prosecutor. I got some silence with my assertion that due to the department’s own policy showing a uniformed officer as an exercise of use of power that makes it unlikely. One of the detectives did say that he agreed with me and then gave a really good explanation why. Very interesting.

It’s strange to watch because I’d heard allegations about this officer connected with some form of misconduct where women were the target group in the past. I’m still curious about IA being there. They said they’ll try to be there during the entire trial (then one asked if I was going to write anything on the union elections) and I think there’s still an admin. investigation going on against this guy (who the police chief said he fired last year) and at least one other officer. Hopefully the lingerie incident as well. The admin. investigation usually tails the criminal process in cases where alleged officer misconduct is suspected and subsequently treated as criminal.

What are you planning to stuff the Squid with, Amp? And what kind of squid is Jake Squid, anyway? Sounds kind of skinny. You might have to shove some sausage in there to fatten it up.

Amazingly enough, I’ll actually be in town for Thanksgiving. Dad’s been gone for over a year now and Mom will be with a friend for Thanksgiving. So we’ll be at my wife’s sister’s house for Thanksgiving. I might even make the Thanksgiving morning service at church for once. Then we’ll leave Friday morning for Indy and stay there with my two brothers and their significant others (the eldest will be driving in from New York State) until Sunday. Football watching, poker and booze should be the order of the day (in no particular order). No cooking! We’ll be doing that for Christmas Eve – it’s our turn for hosting my wife’s family this year.

A male feminist who avoids eating out is problematic, Jake.

Is this preference based on experience?

I thought this was a joke, but it’s real.

I’m sure no one will find this interesting but me, but: Chris Daniels, a local talk radio host, just took a call from me where I took him to task over the hypocrisy of him calling the Tea Party movement “grassroots” while he promotes it on his show every day. He responded by completely avoiding the question. I was nervous, having never done anything like that before, but it was very exciting for my little nerdy self. :)

I think that was cool. I hope you made some people think.

How does a local radio host promoting a political action make it not grassroots? If he was paid to do so or had been contacted by one of the political parties or some national organization to promote it I think you’d have a point. But if it’s something he’s decided through observation that he favors and decides to promote it I’m not clear that such action invalidates the “grassroots” nature of it.

The third victim testified today and got similar treatment. It came up in her testimony that the officer used racial slurs.

ABC cancels Adam Lambert from Good Morning America because of his risque gay performance.

    Their replacement: Chris Brown.

    Nice.
