That Election Thing

I haven’t really been talking about the election much, partly because I’ve been busy with real-life stuff and partly because I don’t have much to say that I haven’t said already about the Tea party. It’s hard to argue policy with people who occupy a fictional universe. As for last night, yes, I’m disheartened. I […] Continue reading

Interview, interview, interview!

There are three (!) new interviews with me available online:
* On the Blog of the Association of Jewish Libraries
* On Graphic Novel Reporter
* And on The Portland Examiner (part one of a three-part interview!)
Goodness! Thanks to all three interviewer… Continue reading

This Week’s Cartoon: “Incredible Shrinking Groceries”

I noticed while buying orange juice that the Fred Meyer store brand had a big notice on the carton saying “STILL 64 OUNCES!” I was like, Whoa! Are half-gallons of OJ no longer half-gallons? Sure enough, other brands had gone down to 59 oz. Apparently last winter’s freeze damaged Florida orange crops, making juice more […] Continue reading

Video of me drawing Mirka

Here’s a video I made of me drawing Mirka. I’m not very happy with how the drawing came out, to tell the truth, but the video might still be fun to watch. The video is speeded up to ten times the actual speed I drew at.

And part two: Continue reading

Hereville reviewed on “Attempts”

I’m a fan of Stephen Frug’s blog “Attempts,” so I was delighted that he wrote an in-depth review of Hereville (and relieved that he liked it!). Here’s a sample: In both his page layouts and lettering, the largest influence on Deutsch’s work appears to be Dave Sim’s Cerebus. I checked, and he admits as much […] Continue reading

Farewell, Honorable Namesake

I was saddened yesterday when I learned that JFK’s right-hand man Ted Sorensen had died. We were not related — although I did have a pleasant email exchange with his grandson (or grandnephew?) once. I always thought maybe I’d get to meet Ted someday, and we could rap about our shared Sorensen-ness. Alas, it’s too […] Continue reading

I.T.C.H. Interview

There’s a nice interview with me up on the International Team of Comic Historians blog. The interviewer did a particularly good job of asking not-the-standard questions. Continue reading

REPOST: Don’t dress up like what you think is a Jamaican this Halloween.

Or an Indian, Chinese, Native America, Mexican …
There’s another post on my fl list that says puts it even more bluntly, but its locked. However, I found another blog that breaks down the sentiments quite nicely. My identity is NOT a costume for you to wear! (The Native American via Ancient Eygpt costume is in […]

Horn Book reviews Hereville: “Unique, laugh-out-loud funny, and thoroughly engrossing.”

From Horn Book Magazine: Eleven-year-old Mirka Herschberg is not your average dragon-slaying heroine. For starters, she’s a Hasidic Jew. Then there are the crazy quarrels with her stepmother, Fruma, who defends one side of an argument, then, in a heartbeat, switches to the other. Case in point: “You want to slaughter innocent dragons? How could […] Continue reading

This Week’s Cartoon: “Clarence Thomas Video Club”

I have always been appalled by the amount of blind hatred directed at Anita Hill merely because she spoke up about being sexually harassed by Clarence Thomas. So I confess to enjoying the outpouring of corroborating evidence in the wake of Ginny Thomas’s ill-fated voicemail to Hill.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I have no problem […] Continue reading
