Not including deleted comments (mostly spam), and not including several hundred comments that have been lost in this or that move from one software system to another…

But including some trackbacks (that’s how WordPress works, alas)…

In other words, counting only those comments that my software keeps count of…

There have now been over 25,000 comments posted to “Alas.” As of a few minutes ago.

So, cool. Frankly, although I hope some of my posts are good, it’s obvious to me that the comments discussion is by far the best thing about this blog. Keep it up, folks!

Oh, hey, and I hope people like the new “italics,” “bold,” etc, buttons (they came from here).

On the off chance that this is also a “hey, let me know what’s going on with the site” thread…

As near as I can figure out, http://www.amptoons.com/blog redirects to http://amptoons.theennead.com/blog/ which redirects to http://www.amptoons.com/blog (lather, rinse, repeat). The correct address of the site seems to be http://www.amptoons.com/blog/. Anyone following an old link could become stuck in an infinite loop of redirection (this is part of the reason why I thought that the site was down for much longer than it actually apparently was).

Are you doing away with a public e-mail address that people can use to contact you without using the public comments system? Before the site went down, you had an address of alas at amptoons dot com posted, but all mail sent to that address was returned to me. I can’t find an e-mail address on the current main page.

That said, congratulations on having such a wonderful, thriving site. May your servers live long.

    Many Congrats, Amp!

Er, also on the subject of broken links that Poppies touched on, the link to Pre-Structuralist Funnies [ https://amptoons.com/psfunnies/index.htm ] from the ‘other comics’ page [ https://amptoons.com/othercomics.html ] is dead.

Anyway, yay again for the Alas community!

    Wow! Congratulations!

The buttons are pretty cool. And congrats on the 25000 comments. I’d like to think I contributed my fair share.

    Rock on, Amp.

  5. I’m loving the new buttons. Really.

    PDP,

I had similar problems as well, but clearing the cache on my browser fixed them for me, and now both of those addresses work fine. Try clearing the cache on your browser. You may need to close and restart your browser as well.

    Charles,

I did that a couple times prior to commenting, just to be sure. No luck.

  8. Ampersand says:

I have to admit, PDP, I’m bewildered. I’ve tried to reproduce the error on my computer, but no luck.

Also, “alas@amptoons.com” should work. I did receive one email from you, about an article about the new Warren Farrell book, but I rudely didn’t answer it (sorry!). I didn’t intend to be rude – I just got busy and your email got kinda buried.

I’d like to help, but I honestly don’t know how to proceed from this point.

Audio-Visual: I fixed the broken “Pre Structuralist Funnies” page. Thanks for pointing that out!

congrats! you run a great blog… i have learned a great deal here, not only from you but from the many eloquent & intelligent folk who comment here. also, i appreciate that you tolerate the amount of snark a grumpy old misfit like me can spew. ;)

i like the new alternating colors for the comments, btw…. very classy.

  10. jam says:

ok, i’m going crazy… i swear the individual comments were being highlighted in different alternating shades of color just two seconds ago.

    i swear!!

sigh…. make that grumpy old crazy misfit.

  11. ScottM says:

Thanks for providing such a cool spot to allow a community to develop.

  12. Ampersand says:

Jam: You’re not crazy! I spent a while fooling around with alternating colors for the comments. It looked nice at first.

But then, when I added in the “peepers” graphic (which has been missing from “Alas” since the site crashed), the alternating colors didn’t look good anymore. So I got rid of them. That must have been just as you were posting.

Progressivism under attack at San Jose State University.

A student group, Stand UP, attempting to raise student awareness of activism at San Jose State University, is being attacked by comments of the student body president, who is trying to get the group to cease using the Raised Fist symbol. The student body president using student funds, is sending out emails questioning the ethics of the Raised Fist symbol, universally regarded as the symbol of diversity. People should contact San Jose State University and ask why (sjsupres@sjsu.edu) students are having to defend their desire of raising progressive awareness.

In celebration of this milestone, why not check out the WMD auction taking place on Yahoo. All proceeds go to Halliburton, so let’s all pitch in!

  15. trench says:

damn, the traffic in here must be crazy! Good work and congrats

  16. jam says:

Mr. Ampersand kindly noted: Jam: You’re not crazy! I spent a while fooling around with alternating colors for the comments.

whew! now i can go back to being just plain old grumpy & misfitted… ;)

I’m at a loss to explain it, as well. The problem is no longer reproducible at any of my computers, either. [sigh] Well, at least that’s a non-problem.
