D&D Geeks Attacked By Zombies

here in montreal we have this big mountain/parc called the mount-royal. think of it as central parc as mountain. and every sunday for the past 20-something years thousands of hippies converge and play tam tams for hours. over the years all sort of other things started happening. most people just lay in the grass and smoke some pot while the cops turn a blind eye. people sell bracelets and piantings while some DnD nerds fights with big duct-tape swords.

thats what we were interested in. what would happen if an army of zombies came out of the woods and attacked the duct-tape fighters?

Go read the whole story. It sounds like a pretty damn glorious day – and like fun for everyone, including the D&D nerds. Plus, there are some pictures.

This whole thing goes down every Sunday about 4 blocks from my flat and I’m ussually there, but on the 3rd I headed to JazzFest. Can’t believe I missed it!!! Hopefully something of the sort will happen again sometime soon, looks wild.

This is one of the great secrets of Montreal — the party on the Mountain on Sunday afternoon. It goes on all summer, spring and fall (not winter which is mostly reserved for the tabogons coming down the mountain). I highly recommend it for tourists coming to the greatest city on earth. Its on the East side of the mountain right off Avenue du Parc at Mont Royal. If you haven’t been to Montreal in the summertime you’re missing out.

That sounds like the Best Day Ever.

That really sounded like a good time. I wonder what the DnDers thought? Or are they really SCAers (Society for Creative Anachronisms)?

    That must’ve absolutely ROCKED.

And some of those pix are brilliant.

I’m so upset I missed it! Can you imagine, one of the weeks I don’t go to tamtams and this happens? Life is so unfair.

Great Secrets? The TamTams is an institution. It’s not secret at all.

The fighters are a mix of gamer geeks, SCAdians, fight fans, etc. My friend Lyndsey goes (in fact, she mentioned on her livejournal fighting zombies, so that may well have been her that the guy mentions thanking her in his post. She did say she had been depressed and this snapped her out of it.)

I’m sad I missed it. It sounded like a real blast.

Well, I meant great secret for visitors to Montreal. I used to come up here all the time before I moved (finally) and never heard or read a thing about it until I stumbled upon it one day. Who knew so many Alas readers were Montrealers.

  8. The game is called “LARP” for Live-Action Role Play. It’s a hobby of mine. The SCA could be seen as a form of it, but they’re generally more concerned with re-enactment, similar to Civil War re-enactors. SCA has no D&D element to it.

You can laugh at the duct-tape fighters, but honestly you can’t imagine how much fun it is until you’ve tried it for yourself.

It happens *every* sunday. You just have to walk up the hill a bit, it is not where the statue is.
