I’m headed to Hell Florida to visit the folks. Since I don’t have a laptop, my internet access will be intermittent until next week; this not only means that posting by me will slow down, but also that comments waiting in moderation will probably wait longer than they usually do.
Thanks in advance for what I imagine will be your patience. :-)

Have a nice trip. Oregon to Florida is quite a flight (that’s what you get for having an oversized country ;) ).
Um, since you’re going to be there anyway, could you visit my folks, too? They’re kind of near Bradenton, but not actually *in* Bradenton. Just tell them you’re me. It’ll work, I swear. Their harangues are one-size-fits-all.
I’m going to hell. No doubt about it.
Safe trip! Have fun! Watch out for swamp creatures! http://www.discourse.net/archives/2006/04/animals_behaving_badly.html
The only time I went to Florida, to visit my sister, was in August about thirty years ago. The heat and humidity were awful, the mosquitoes were awful, there was some kind of insect called love bugs that smacked to their deaths on car windshields with such frequency that you couldn’t go more than 20 miles at a time without stopping to scrape their little carcasses off the windshield. My brother-in-law was just starting out on his life’s work, to become an alcoholic who smoked three packs of cigarettes a day.
Have fun!
no, no, no — you’re quite correct. Florida IS Hell; I should know; I live here
I thought I was the only one who disliked Florida–it is way too damn hot down there.
I think you had it right the first time. The only difference between Florida and Hell is that Hell has Satan. And in the movie Legend Satan was played by Tim Curry. Who rocks.
Anyway, have fun and come back soon. :)
Yeah, but Tim Curry’s Hell had a Tangerine Dream soundtrack. I’d pick Florida.
I’m hoping for some further thoughts from the bloggers of Alas on the Duke rape case. I’m weighing the relative value of having an atypical rape case* receiving national attention versus the fact that this attention may well contribute to justice being served in a situation where it usually isn’t. How do we place this case in the context of rape culture on whole?
*I say atypical because the overwhelming majority of rape victims know their attackers. Additionally the profound disparities of privilege between the Duke players and the victim undoubtedly must play a huge role in discussing the tragedy of this case. Those two large factors combine to create a discussion of rape that is not particularly representive of rape on whole.
I went to Florida once only and thought not to visit it again. I agree with Bob. One keep on thinking where he or she has landed up.
By the way what is the purpose behind your visit? Personal or professional.
Have a nice trip and let us know about your experience. Bye bye.
