exquisitely written. also, toweringly depressing. and utterly believable.

  3. Tapetum says:

That was you? I just read that following a link from John Scalzi. Fabulous work.

  4. Mandolin says:

“I just read that following a link from John Scalzi.”

    He was very kind. ;)

He bought a story from me last year for Subterranean Magazine #4, the cliche issue.

  5. Myca says:

Wow, that was really quite excellent!

Do you have more of your stuff online?

  6. Robert says:

An excellent and evocative piece. Nicely done.

You could make it even stronger if you fixed the science, though. Unless buried nuclear waste turning a global catastrophe into Armageddon is the point of the tale (which impression I didn’t get), having the asteroid hit a waste dump is silly. Nuclear waste isn’t that toxic, and is less radioactive than the found-in-nature material that went into things in the first place. Have it hit in Oklo if radioactive dust is your villain of choice, or a nuclear stockpile or something.

  7. Mandolin says:

    Robert,

That particular bit of science was vetted through actual scientists. ;-)

    Myca,

I do. Much of it’s linked through my website: http://www.rachelswirsky.com

Went and read the previous Subterranean story too. Please keep writing. I want to read more.
