Is Alberto Gonzales the worst Attorney General in American history? It depends – who’s Alberto Gonzales again? I’m afraid I can’t recall. Unfortunately, though a great deal of evidence has been presented by this committee that Alberto Gonzales was a friend and legal counsel to George W. Bush in Texas, before serving as White House Counsel and ultimately as the first Latino Attorney General, I am unfortunately unaware of this “Alberto Gonzales” you speak of, Senator.
Yes, yes, it certainly appears that Alberto Gonzales was an incompetent nincompoop who was instrumental in firing U.S. Attorneys for partisan reasons. But who can say for sure? Certainly not me. I have no recollection of watching Gonzales testify before the U.S. Senate’s Judiciary Committee that he had no recollection of anything whatsoever. And unfortunately, even if I did have that recollection, I would be unable to disclose it due to executive privilege.
In short, Alberto Gonzales may or may not have been a massive douchebag, but who can recall? And while it sure appears that he did in fact exist, and that he used his tenure in office to destroy the independence of the Department of Justice, maybe we all are just misremembering. It was a long time ago, after all.
