Although most of them don’t come up in the comic, Mirka actually has a lot of sisters. Just one brother, though. Anyhow, I thought this sketch of all the siblings would be fun to post.

This sketch rules by the way. When is book two coming out?
I’m curious if there’s a reason you made all the other siblings take after the mother so much, while Mirka looks different (like her father?).

I think first we are to be treated to the much expanded version of book 1. Now with pigs.
I’m afraid that book 1 isn’t going to come out until some unknown time in 2010. As Mandolin says, it’s going to be the same story that’s in the comic, but much expanded — two of the sisters here (Gittel and Rochel) are important characters in book one, and they don’t even appear in the comic!
(Plus, as Mandolin alluded to, a pig is a major character in book one, and it didn’t appear in the comic either.)
Dianne, Malkie and Shira are Fruma’s biological children from this marriage. Gittel is Fruma’s biological child from a previous relationship.
Chingona, none of these people are the mom — Chayan, on the far right of the drawing, is Mirka’s eldest sister. Mirka’s mom died years ago. (Fruma, who Dianne referred to, is Mirka’s stepmother.) I didn’t really think much about hereditary stuff when I designed their looks, to tell you the truth. Of all of them here, Brocha is the one who most resembles her mother.

I knew none of the people in this sketch were the mom, but I thought they all had faces very similar to the mother’s (from that one flashback scene where she’s telling Mirka to take care of her brother), except Mirka. Of course, if some of them are Fruma’s kids, then it’s just in my head.
Well, it’s probably that I just tend to draw most of my characters the same. :-) I’ll work on their designs some more — for several of these characters, this is the first time I’ve ever drawn them.
Mirka does stand out visually from her family. That wasn’t a conscious choice on my part, but I don’t mind it — it goes along with her general oddballness.

I guess that’s kind of what I was getting at, maybe in a backwards way. When I think of large families I have known, there often is a certain family personality, for lack of a better word, and I imagine that if Mirka’s family has a family personality, she would not be totally in sync with it.

You know, I’m sure I should probably be coming up with some kind of cogent comment, something that would let Barry know how much I like this drawing and look forward to more of his work, or at least shows the way I felt (I actually said ‘Oh, hey, COOL’ out loud, if only to myself) when I saw the pic when I loaded up the site.
But I can’t think of any of that stuff. All I’ve got is “Hee. Angry Zindel!”

It looks like Mirka is the middle kid or at least one of the middle kids. Maybe one reason she is a bit rebellious–it’s the only way to attract attention?
