While We're On the Subject of Hitler

This. For the win.

Incidentally, if you haven’t seen Der Untergang, I highly recommend it. It’s a masterful portrayal of the pitiful, puny end of the Third Reich — in many ways, the sort of end a megalomaniac like Hitler must have despised. I hope so, anyhow.

The best one of these I’ve ever seen was about Hitler trying to find parking in Tel Aviv. Alas, for some reason, it’s been taken down due to complaints from whoever holds the copyright, when all the others are still out there.

That was hilarious. I had no idea there was a genre.

  3. I like the bit at 3:03. After nearly coughing up a lung, I get a chance to catch my breath. Then that line :)

I’m ridiculously fond of the entire genre of Downfall parody videos, but I always find myself thinking about how totally surreal they must be for German speakers. I suspect that they’re considerably less effective for those who actually understand the words being spoken.

    Elkins,

My husband speaks German pretty well – not a native speaker, but studied for many years and lived in Germany for a year on two separate occasions – and he had a really hard time with these because he couldn’t not listen to and understand the German. It’s almost like it made it harder for him to follow the subtitles and so he couldn’t keep up with the jokes. All he could think was “That’s not what they’re saying!”

The worst part is, there is no way I can ever watch the original film now. Not a chance.

EDIT: Having watched the clip, I see they sort of covered that.
