Feminism has always been on the wane

90 95 years ago today, the women’s suffrage movement lost an important vote in the House of Representatives. From the New York Times, January 12, 1915.

Mrs. Arthur M. Dodge, President of the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage, said after the vote was taken tonight:

“The deliberations of the House of Representatives today were, of course, of the greatest importance because the final vote was such as to persuade the country forever that the National Congress will not undertake to dictate to the various States what they shall do in the regulation of their franchise.

“In my opinion today’s work in the House demonstrated that from now on the wave of hysteria in which the suffragists have indulged or of which they have been the victims will be on the wane.”

I believe it’s doing business as The National Review these days.

NAOWS needs to make a come back. imagine representatives of that group crashing “tea party” events and trying to hijack the whole situation. It would be a great bit of guerrilla theater.

Months ago I was seriously tempted to do similar, when the tea party types started waving photos of Obama with a Hitler mustache. I wanted to crash their rally, doing a variation of Woody Allen’s gag from ANNIE HALL where he pulled Marshall McCluen from behind a prop to shut up an idiot in line ahead of him. “I’ve been listening to what you’re saying, and you know NOTHING of my work…” if you remember the bit.

Couldn’t find anyone who could do a good Hitler impression.

Strangely, good Hitler impersonations just don’t have much of a market.

The best part, to me, is Mrs. Arthur M. Dodge.

Who is the President of this powerful organization that that successfully lobbied the U.S. House of Representative to vote in its favor? I don’t know . . . Art’s wife. . . Whatsername.
