I doubt I’m the only person who’s thought of that Far Side cartoon when hearing about the plane crash in New York City today; happily, while at least one bird appears to be dead, all humans appear present and accounted for. Needless to say, that was a heck of a job by a pilot and flight crew to get the plane down and safe, and a great job by the many ferries to get out and onto the river quickly, to make sure people were evacuated safely. Alas, my heart goes out to the Meeker family.
Why do I get more scared of flying the older I get? Isn’t it supposed to go the opposite way?
So perfectly cast were the roles of two pilots. One perfectly suited to be the hero, one day after another to play the ass.
I totally did. Not only that, when I was listening to the report, I actually thought, “Aw, poor Harold Meeker.” That’s a name that sticks with you.
I’m afraid it wasn’t just Harold. Planes are built to take a bird or two in the engine without losing power. Harold and his whole extended family got wiped out…The humans all made it, quite against expectation, partly because they landed right in front of a ferry terminal and got taken off before their hypothermia got too bad.
Classic! I immediately thought of the exact same cartoon…a bit guilty for thinking of a humorous cartoon at first but obviously less so when I heard that all survived…thanks for putting this out there
I happened to be looking at an old larson while in the toilet. I’ve been living in the south of France for the past 8 years. Thought I’d share this Larson with my e-mail connexions. Funny, my cousin who lives in NY sends me this link. How sweet and exhilarating. (After all the emotions we’ve gone through in the past couple of days).
