- Untitled May 2, 2024I love that Caterpillar boots were among the returned items, and in this photo an Amazon worker took, you can clearly see the "CAT" logo near the cat. Cat climbed into Amazon return box, found alive 630 miles away wapo.st/3JJ3vqT

- Untitled April 30, 2024People on reddit are fighting about a cartoon I did about why the US health care system sucks and I am enjoying this too too much. https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/1ch0l0r/why_us_health_care_is_such_a_terrible_system/?sort=old

Very funny!
That sure does ring a bell for anyone familiar with that kind of preparation. I like Mirka’s hair in the first panel; somehow, it gives a very realistic touch to the whole page. And I smiled at “the Spiegelmans are coming” (I think the Spiegelmans, Art and Françoise, are in Paris right now for the release of the French edition of In the Shadow of No Towers).
The exposed evil of the Stepmother. If she makes them polish untarnished candlesticks…
Yes, it was funny. It reminds me of home, Dad always launched into a “flight of the bumblebee” when guests were due.
I never knew that about the challah.
I like Mirka quizzing the brother (I suddenly forget his name). Very good, Amp.
The brother’s name is Zindel, right? I love that! Though I keep wanting to call him Zissel (which means “Sweetie”.)
Now here I thought this was set in the shtetl in the 19th century, and look, they have a dishwasher and a vacuum cleaner. Where is this shtetl, anyway? Hmmmm?
You made that up about the challah, didn’t you? I love you Barry! I hope you were listening to that nice Klezmatics tune, Lomir heybn dem bekher, when you were doing this strip.
Thanks to everyone for comments. :D
RA:
Okay, I’m definitely going to have to have Fruma call Zindel “Zissel” sometime – that’s too perfect not to use!
Hereville takes place pretty much in the present day. The town, Aherville, is located in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. (There will be more details about Aherville’s origins and location eventually).
And I didn’t make up the bit about the Challah, honest! And I don’t know the Klezmatics (broadway showtunes are more my preference), but I’ll keep an eye out for them.
the challah thing sounds like one of those things that different families (cities, synagogues, et al) have different explanations for.
it’s apocryphal, so pick one you like.
I believe the version I heard was the three sacrifical holidays (pesach, shavuot, and… umm.. the other one.)
although I’ve also heard. “the first temple, the second temple, and the third temple, of the messiach.”
can you tell I haven’t been in a synagogue for more than a few years?
Sukkot. Sukkot is the other one. (Coming up soon, actually.)
yeah, that’s the one.
hard to believe I’m the son of a rabbi, right?
The brother’s name is Zindel, right? I love that!
Out of curiosity, does Zindel mean anything?
