While sick I also had time to kill on the internet, that great eater of time.
- Scott McCloud gave birth to this gem of a comic, But No One Ever Noticed the Walrus (in two parts, here and here) which, I must confess, confirms to me that Mr. McCloud is entirely worthy of the crush I have on him.
- Kevin Moore’s Blarg Blog has a good post up about the contrasting image tactics of the Dean and Kucinich campaigns and why the campaigns selected the images they have.
- You know, I think that I like this more than I’ve ever liked an actual Cathy strip. (at Badly Drawn Comics)
- There’s a really great article from Bitch Magazine about the self-contradictory nature of so-called alternaporn sites like Suicide Girls and FrictionUSA.
- Does the Canadian flag offend you? Apparently it really bothers some people. (via Pandagon)
- And don’t forget: Vacuums are from hell.
And that’s about it for tonight. It seems like all of the blogs in my bookmarks are talking about Gore endorsing Dean, and none of the magazines had anything interesting to say..
On the Canadian flag thing — saw that the other day in the Globe and Mail — I’ve long thought that that sentiment is common in America (not all, of course, but common) because Canadians are really so much like Americans. They’re like us, so why are they offended, even in the slightest, by others assuming they’re American? That they might have national pride over the differences they do have (and some imaginary diffs too) doesn’t occur…
This similarity between the two countries’ peoples also leads to another big cognitive dissonance issue for many Americans. When we say that, for instance, France and Sweden have universal health care and effective gun control etc., Americans can comfort themselves by thinking that those people are very different from us, and live in a very different place. They’re foreign, for god’s sake.
But Canadians. They just aren’t foreign enough. If you point out that Canadians have universal health care, effective gun control, and now gay marriage and relaxed pot laws, it takes away that excuse for Americans to not be able to do the same.
These issues have been written up recently, btw, as part of the promotion for a book called Fire and Ice, dealing with the thesis that Canada and America are growing apart at present, culturally. I haven’t read it, but probably should be (I have the feeling I know the basics from day to day interaction).
Just wanted to comment on the cool drawing/caricatures on your site. They look great!! Did you do them yourself??
I (Ampersand) drew them myself – but the post you’re responding to is by PinkDreamPoppies, not by me.
Thanks for the kind words – glad you enjoy the drawings.
