Bea Arthur, 1922-2009

When it comes to comedy, Bea Arthur could bring it. Her career is a testament to that; few actors can boast a career that spans one decade, let alone seven. The woman was a fantastic talent, and she’ll be missed.

And of course, who could forget…

Requiescat in pace.

Thanks for putting together this tribute. I was never much of a fan of the Golden Girls, but I grew up with Maude. What a role model she was and the episode about Maude getting an abortion spurred so much positive discussion in this country. It made the topic something you could actually talk about for the first time.

    She was a pioneer.

But – the funniest Bea Arthur piece I ever saw was in Lucille Ball’s otherwise mediocre remake of Mame. When Bea was on the screen she stole the show.

    Thanks again!

How can we not think of Bea Arthur and remember fondly the “old compromisin’, enterprisin’, anything but tranquilizing, right on Maude.”

I was 4 when that show started but I still watched it in reruns and LOVE it!!! A true feminist and she carried on that tradition with the Golden Girls as well.

I’m 38 years old, and I’ve never cried so much over the death of a person I never really knew before like I have today for Bea Arthur.

I was so lucky to have seen her do her one woman show on Broadway in 2002. Seeing her perform Pirate Jenny live will go down as one of the great moments of my life!

Even though we never met, Bea, thank you for being a friend.
