My Website is Gone

For those of you familiar with moderateleft.com, you may be wondering why the site is not so much there right now. Well, my registrar helpfully never notified me that the domain name was nearing the end of its operational life, and in the dark of nite a domain name vulture swept in and took it.

I’m seeing if there’s any way to bring it back to life, but I’m not hopeful at this point; I’ll have to figure out what happens next. The good news is that I think I’ve at least got the database backed up through February, so if I have to start over somewhere else I won’t have lost most of my stuff.

Le sigh.

That totally sucks, Jeff. I’m sorry to hear it.

  2. Jeff Fecke says:

It looks like it’s possible my site is only mostly dead — my IPP is working on it. We’ll see what transpires, of course.

  3. Ampersand says:

    Good luck with that!

  4. Something like that happened to me as well, and so I ended up changing hosting companies. It really does suck; I am sorry you’re going through it.

As horrible as Hosting Matters has been, they so far have not lost my domain to the squatters. If you don’t get the domain back, be sure to let people know to change their links (including ones in posts, not just in the blogroll) to drain the old URL of its Google Rank (which is what the squatters want to steal).

I intend to. If nothing else, it will give me an excuse to pick out a new domain name, which is always fun.

  7. Radfem says:

    I’m sorry about your site.

It sucks if you lost the domain name but unless they are total jerks they should have at least kept your data somewhere! You shouldn’t have to use your backups.
